Chapter 27

Lucian’s POV

I watched as Calla stormed out of my study room in anger, her words still ringing in my ears. She had pricked my pride by refusing to answer my questions about Axel, and her statement about never being my mate had only served to fuel my anger further. How dare she speak to me like that?

I tried to convince myself that I didn't care about her opinion, that I didn't want her as my mate anyway, but the truth was that her words stung. I couldn't shake the feeling that I had somehow offended her, but I couldn't bring myself to apologize. My cold exterior was all I had to protect myself from the pain of rejection.

As I sat there alone in my study, I couldn't help but wonder why I felt so strongly about Calla. She was just another member of my pack, nothing more. And yet, something about her stirred a longing within me that I couldn't ignore.

But for now, I would push those feelings aside and focus on the matter at hand. I couldn't let Calla's defiance go unpunished.
