Chapter 32: Handwritten Notes

"Leo," I said somewhat breathlessly.

His eyes scanned me and then fell onto my bag. A weight pressed on my chest.

"Can we talk outside?" he asked, not taking his eyes off mine.

I nodded and followed him to the front steps leading up to his house. Leo reached around me and closed the door, giving us privacy. His scent was typically wondrous to me, but the added layer of musk and natural scent played with my emotions more than usual. I inhaled—not to breathe him in more, but to steady myself and regain control of my senses.

He stepped back and eyed me for what seemed like a long time. I wish I knew what he was thinking. Even my ability to feel his emotions were dwindling. Is this what it was like to reject your mate?

"You're leaving," he said, finally speaking, pointing to my bag.

"Yeah," I said, looking at it. "Gwenna gave me some food for the trip and I think I have everything."

"Does this have to do with what happened yesterday?" he questioned, almost cutting into my spee
