Chapter 19

RIVER LAVERNE

I sat on my bed staring blankly at the wall, scrolling through my phone, wondering why Damon hadn't called me for weeks. We had been seeing each other for months, and I thought things were going great between us.

I decided to message him to ask if we could meet up. He replied almost immediately and agreed to meet me at our usual spot. I got dressed and headed out to see him, my heart pounding with excitement.

As soon as I saw him, I knew something was wrong. He was distant and cold, and didn't seem interested in anything I had to say. I tried to make small talk, but he kept looking at his phone, ignoring me.

Finally, I asked him what was going on. He looked up at me with a guilty expression on his face and said, "River, I need to tell you something. I'm married."

My heart sank, and I felt like someone had punched me in the gut. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "What do you mean you're married?" I asked, my voice shaking.
