Lyra's POV

I could see in her eyes the shock that she couldn't even try to hide. She was looking at me like I had said something that I shouldn't have, like I was making up stories that were too dangerous.

But the fright and surprise in her eyes were too much to be ignored, I had never seen her like that. She was a cruel mother to me and she didn't even try to hide that she didn't care about me. I have seen several parts of her the world was blinded to, I have seen her in differents lights, I had tried to understand why a mother would ever treat her daughter that way, sometimes, I believed that I was a mistake that I was nothing more than the thing she looked upon one day and hated and regretted so intensely.

I had seen her angry, hungry, happy even though it was on rare occasions, I have seen parts of her that nobody on this earth knew about.
