Chloe POV

Cortina ran for about twenty minutes, relishing the feel of the moist living dirt under her claws and the fresh scent of pine running through her fur, when we felt the thudding of another beast free in the forest. She pushed herself harder, not sure if the paws were from guards or some other beast, but not wanting to find out. No matter how hard she pushed herself, the thundering thrum of the creature kept getting closer and closer.

Then, Cortina started sniffing the air and suddenly came to a stop. She lifted her snout in the air, taking long mouthwatering inhales of the air as the pounding of feet got louder and louder. She stared at a fixed point between two juniper trees, hankering down like she was anchoring herself, ready for whoever it was to break through the shrubs.

Suddenly, a large, muscular dark gray wolf leaped over a large fern, steam blowing from his nostrils as he came to a stop. His vivid blue eyes were as sharp as his human’s. I knew who the wolf was right
