Chapter 7

Kathleen’s POV

“Alpha Lancelot Vance is my mate!" Lyra's proclamation echoed through the classroom, not merely directed at me but broadcasted for all to hear, leaving me dumbfounded as I stared back at her in disbelief.

"Do you understand now? He belongs to me!" Lyra's words sliced through the air, each syllable a pointed reminder aimed directly at me.

I couldn't hide the disappointment I felt.

Struggling to conceal it, I averted my gaze, feigning disinterest as I responded, "Oh, really? You've found your mate?"

She scoffed, her disdain palpable as her piercing gaze bore into me. “I wasn't holding water in my mouth when I said it, dummy! Do you think I didn't hear what went on between the two of you yesterday?!”

Squirming under the weight of her accusation and the curious gazes of my peers, I nervously bit my lip, unable to offer a retort. The whispers of my classmates only added to my discomfort.

“And to think, I assumed you possessed even a shred of decency, despite lacking a wolf. Clearly, I was mistaken! You're nothing but a promiscuous disgrace, and I'm certain even your fathers would be utterly ashamed of you!" Lyra's harsh words struck me like a blow to the chest, leaving me reeling with a heavy sense of shame.

“Come on, Lyra, ease up a bit! We're in public, and your tone is way too harsh," Maggie interjected, her annoyance evident in her voice.

“Harsh? You think this is harsh?" Lyra retorted, her tone dripping with disdain. "You haven't seen anything yet. I'll take it that yesterday was a mistake and now that you know the truth, you will stay away from him, and if I catch wind of you near him again, or even seven feet close to him, you'll regret it!"

“Oh, come on, don't worry, Lyra,” Melody added, her voice dripping with condescension. "I don't know what got into Alpha Lance, but I highly doubt he'll be seeking her out again. After all, she's just an Omega who doesn't even deserve to be here. Just know your place, okay?”

I With a resigned sigh, I lifted my gaze to meet their scornful stares, seeing Rhea just nodding in agreement without saying anything to add to their insults.

Lyra's anger manifested in her eyes, which transformed into a piercing golden hue, showing she meant business. It was as if her very werewolf echoed her demand for me to step back. With a shake of her head and an irritated scowl, she turned away, leaving me to digest their cutting words.

“Wow, that's a bummer,” I heard Maggie say and I looked at her with an aggrieved expression. As she noticed it, she continued in disbelief, “Are you seriously sulking for real? Snap out of it, Katy! We both know your chances with Alpha Lance were slim to none. As you called it, it was an unimaginable once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

I looked away from her, still feeling disheartened. But, I thought I could be his mate.

Yesterday, he saw Lyra before taking my hand, right? What's going on? Something didn't add up.

But dwelling on fantasies would only lead to disappointment. It was time to face reality.

Okay, I really need to snap out of it.

With a heavy sigh, I left the classroom and made my way to my locker. Just like that, my fantasy is slowly coming to an end.

It would be like digging my own grave if I did not adhere to Lyra’s command. As the daughter of the Beta, and a beta herself, I'm definitely dead.

This is me calling a spade a spade.

Back to the real world, Kathleen. Your fantasy was nothing but a fantasy. A mere illusion.

It felt real, but that was just it. Just a feeling and nothing more.

“Hi there," came a voice as I shut my locker, finding Maia Miller standing beside me with a grin.

Returning the smile, I greeted, "Hey."

“I couldn't help but notice the commotion, and I must say, it's intriguing that you caught Alpha Lance's attention," she remarked, still wearing a smile.

I nodded, responding, “Yes, it was quite something.”

“Quite curious, though, wouldn't you agree? Why Alpha Lance singled you out? I witnessed it," Maia inquired, raising an eyebrow.

Baffled like her, I shook my head. "I have no idea. He just did."

“Well, there's always a reason behind everything, Kathleen Callahan,” she concluded with a smirk before walking away.

Now, that's weird.
