Chapter 53

Standing beside the other two courtesans, I tried to look inconspicuous and not get in either of their space. If the men wanted me instead of them, they’d know where to find me.

My earnings were assured. Keaton was happy with me and I had a feeling that was all that mattered. The rest would suck up to him regardless.

But it was quite clear, the men had a lot more interest in me. Both of the next two to reach their count came to my bag to fish out a cube. I knew neither of them and was relieved to find both returning with blank cubes that denied them anything from me, but I knew it diminished what I was holding. Every time a blank cube was taken out it increased the odds of the others being found.

Before anyone else could declare themselves a winner, the doors opened and a new man strolled in. He was dressed in a dark suit, dark glasses over his eyes and a swagger to his walk, his face reserved. I tried not to stare, but found my gaze involuntarily flicked his way more than once.
