Chapter 11

I could not really understand the stares Jaxson was giving me as his eyes were just blankly fixed in my direction.

I could already feel my eyes broaden in sheer terror and extreme nervousness at the sudden situation.

I didn't imagine that it was possible for them to see us here in the middle of signing this agreement, that’s why it left me in shock.

I don't think that Jaxson's lawyer was prepared for the circumstance, either, because we both seemed really surprised.

I cautiously redirected my gaze to Daniella and Lance, who remained silent and continued to watch us.

I'm afraid they'll find out about this arrangement and what Jaxson is actually up to.

My hand simply crawled over to the table and reached for the towel, tossing it over the documents on the table.

Daniella's eyes lowered down to my body, and I caught a glimpse of the abrupt change in the emotions inside her eyes.

When I realized that I hadn't changed my clothes yet and was still wearing her soaked-in-water dress, I felt a bit small of myself and humiliated by her stares.

As I felt my lower lip sting, I realized that I had been biting it almost as if burying my teeth.

“Have you finished signing our prenuptial agreement?” Jaxson muttered tenderly before rising from his seat and casting a gentle glance at me. “Come on, Catt. I don't want you to get sick and show up to our wedding with a fever instead of flowers.”

I was once again completely baffled as to what he was trying to say, so I simply followed him with my gazes, with a trace of wonder on my parted lips and still struggling to understand.

“— Sign the papers quickly, so that we may go upstairs and change your clothes. That one is already damped, we should toss that out.” Jaxson added in a melodious and calm tone.

The lawyer instantly caught my attention by gesturing his hand on the table, slightly pointing at the papers without averting his gapes on me.

I felt like my brain was loaded for a second before I quickly took the pen and removed the towel that was covering the papers as soon as I finally got what they were trying to tell me. And even though I hadn't finished reading the contract up to the final agreement yet, I rushed to sign it.

“All done!” Jaxson’s lawyer exclaimed. “I will take it to a higher level tonight so that the prenuptial agreement can be settled immediately and the wedding will precisely take place in a few days. Congratulations to the both of you!” he let out heartily, to which I returned the smile.

At this point, I clearly understood what they wanted to happen. I was a little delayed in scooping up on the sort of situation they were constructing, but I guess I wasn't too late to catch up.

My phony smiles gradually turned real as I began to notice that the lawyer's enthusiasm didn't appear to be a ruse at all, but he seemed exceptionally delighted with what had happened.

I can truly feel his sincerity right now.

“Thanks, Attorney Campbell. I’m counting on you.” Jaxson blurted, flashing a smirk on his lips, which in turn quickly made the lawyer’s mood change drastically. “Let's go,” he whispered before sliding his fingers between mine to take my hand.

“It’s Finn!” He clamored before we could step away from him. “I told you not to call me by my last name, Madrigal!”

“Alright so, Campbell.” Jaxson added, which irritated the lawyer even more and enough to make him walk out.

There's absolutely no doubt that I was right. He was the guy at the club that night.

Just by seeing how they bicker, it looks like he has a good relationship with Jaxson. And it somehow made me feel relieved to learn that this man has a human friend, even if he’s a bit difficult to get along with.

When we inched to where Daniella and Lance were standing, I could feel my heart plummeting to the floor at any second with the speed of its pounding.

I can't really understand how his step-brother frightens me every time he is around.

I caught a glimpse of Daniella, quietly following Jaxson with her gapes as we barely walked through them.

I felt Lance's malicious leer on me, which made my eyes quickly withdraw from Daniella. And turned my glance to him.

As our gazes met once again, I rapidly felt a little shiver on my knee because of how cold and enigmatic his eyes are.

Why do I have the impression that whenever he stares at me, he's almost as if aiming to threaten my life?

“R-Ray…” Daniella murmured agilely.

My face slammed into Jaxson's back when his feet suddenly came to a halt.

“Don't dare call him that,” Lance said fiercely as he grabbed her arm, and rasped through gritted teeth.

But Daniella's gaze stayed fixed on Jaxson as she waited for him to turn around. Meanwhile, I stand silently in the midst of this chaos, powerless to intervene.

“—Now that he'll be your brother-in-law, you should start calling him Jaxson,” Lance added with a smirk on his lips, and could not hide the tension of his jaws. “Besides, you don’t want our child to grow up wondering why his mother and uncle are so close. Don't you?”

I just knew that he emphasized those words intentionally to flaunt them off on Jaxson's face.

I really don't get why his step-brother is acting this way. And where his rage and bitterness towards his family are coming from. But even so, I don't believe that what he is doing is right.

I watched Daniella's eyes slowly drifting away from Jaxson.

I'm aware that Jaxson acting in this way, and their situation is causing her awful distress. Yet I can't make myself empathize with how she feels right now. Because I know that in all these incidents, someone is the most deeply hurt.

And that is Jaxson.

He may not be the kind of person that will fully express how he is feeling on the inside or tell others when he's upset or pleased. But I guess, I am gradually coming to understand Jax and his personality.

I feel like now, I am so compelled to learn more about him and get to know him better.

My attention was snatched when his grip on my hand tightened again as he pulled me away from where Daniella and Lance were standing.

As he drew me away from Daniella and Lance, I felt his grip on my hand tighten once again.

Even though his clutch was becoming strong again, I merely let my feet follow Jaxson's tugs. Because of his large steps and lengthy legs, we were able to go to his room swiftly.

When we finally made it to Jaxson's room, I was taken aback by what he did next: he gently pushed me inside and pressed the button to close the door. Just like a piece of toy that he puts back in the cabinet.

“Wait! Where are you going–” I was left speechless and appalled as the door shut in front of my eyes without even receiving an answer from Jaxson.

Where does he intend to go at this time?
