Letting down her guard

EVE'S POV

I watched the people around me nervously, hoping Tom hadn't seen what had happened on the dance floor. It was risky and stupid. I knew that.  

But the minute Golden's hands touched mine, No, before that. I had thrown caution to the wind way before that. It was when I had felt his presence. He had approached quietly, I hadn't heard his steps. 

But then that was probably because I was too close to the band and they were quite loud. 

Tom had left me all of five minutes after we arrived at the ball. He had paraded me around the place for a while, introducing me to his business partners, and then left me on my own. He had to meet with the partners to discuss formalities and sign a contract of some sort. 

At least that was what he told me. 

If anyone asked me, I didn't understand why
