Chapter 31

"Madame Charlotte, you are early today. Heading somewhere?" Jacque asked, making a half bow when our eyes met.

"Oh Jacque, no, I was unable to sleep well," I replied, settling on the high stool that sat near the ceramic kitchen top.

Jacque looked at me pitifully and opened the kitchen cabinet that displayed a variety of food spices. He switched on the coffee machine which sizzled quietly. It was almost six o'clock as per my watch which gave me an hour before my departure to the hotel. The day's schedule was yet to be shared online leaving me clueless about who the guest of honor for the day was.

I sat with Jacque as I slowly drank my coffee, letting the heat from the ceramic cup insulate my cold hands. My thoughts attempted to return to yesterday's confrontation with Vivian, but I kept drifting back to the present moment. I indulged Jacque in conversation, talking about anything and everything.

He was great company and even challenged my comprehension by phrasing some statements
