Breakthrough

By this time, Derek’s mother and sister had arrived at the hospital and were waiting anxiously with Ava for more news about Derek.

There were squeals of delight, and then tears of joy and relief at this announcement. After a few more moments, they were allowed to go inside and see Derek.

Ava stood aside, feeling like an interloper, while his mother and sister fussed over him. She was glad that he was alright, but that also meant that her work there was done. She wondered why the thought of that made her feel very sad. The chances were that he didn’t even know her.

Nobody acknowledged her presence, so she quietly picked up her bag and was about to leave when Derek’s mother spoke.

“Oh, dear me! Where are my manners? Ava, please come here. I want you to officially meet my son, Derek. Derek, this is the lady who saved your life. Aside from that, she has been taking care of you ever since you were admitted here. I honestly don’t know what we would have done without her.” Derek’s mother s
