Chapter 14

Katie's POV

I spent the rest of the day deep in thought, trying to figure out Alex's father's motives. Was he really just trying to protect his son's business interests, or was there something more sinister at play? And what about Sophia? Was she really out of the picture, or was she still trying to come between Alex and me?

Days turned into weeks, and Alex and I settled into a comfortable routine. We worked together during the day and spent our evenings exploring the city, trying new restaurants, and enjoying each other's company. But I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.

One evening, Alex came home from a meeting looking troubled. He poured himself a drink and slumped onto the couch beside me.

"What's wrong?" I asked, placing a hand on his knee.

"It's my father," he replied, taking a sip of his drink. "He's been pressuring me to expand our business into some shady dealings, and I can't bring myself to do it."

My heart sank. "What kind of shady dealings?"
