Chapter 36 The Truth

My family—my father, mother, brother, and I, we cherished one another. In my mind, at least, my parents would live with my brother and me for a very long time, but that was the day that everything went wrong. When my brother stole cheese or snacks to share with me, my mother always shook her head and told my father, who had just returned from the union. He would then tug our cheeks and pretended to be upset before kissing us. My mother prepared dinner before twilight and waited for my father to get home. The most enjoyable times were then.

For a time, my father was very busy. He took great responsibility for our pack and vowed to defend it to the bitter end. I worried about him on the days when he left early and came home late.
