Star’s hand froze over the glass she went to pick up and the world rang with a high-pitched silence, the only sound she heard through her daze was a deep growl from Max’s chest.
“Dad, what the hell?” The scene was playing like a movie before her, Max was on his feet blocking Star from view while Cybel cowered against the dining room wall with Will poised defensively before her.
“Get away from her, William.” Max’s Alpha tone bounced off the walls with a kind of power that was hard to resist and it only made the girl cower deeper.

Will’s four paws skidded to a halt even before he saw the arrow whizzing his way, the group of wolves behind him, coming just as much of an abrupt stop. It didn’t take a genius to know they were under attack. “Dad, attack at the northern border.” Will fixed his stance and growled in the direction the arrow came from, he could hear footsteps and the crack of dry leaves and sticks, but they had yet to show themselves. The hour ticked by at a snail’s pace, the sun was already high in the sky and the morning’s patrol was now a morning tragedy, Max didn’t know how to face his pack.
