Five years ago.
A small library detached from the palace. A place where even the caretaker rarely visits. This place was her secret place. At the west end of the library, she’d been looking for a book on the bottom of the bookshelf, and when she removed a few books, she found a small space where she could crawl inside.
Ever since she found that space, she often came there to hide when the other concubines beat her for stealing food. In order to not be found, she put the books back in place from the inside and silently cried.
It was the same that day.
The sound of heavy breathing echoed throughout the quiet library and she wondered if they had found her, but dismissed the thought as she’s the only one who knows of the secret place.
The breathing got closer, and she heard a thud. Her hands flew to her mouth to stop her shriek, she looked in the space above the books and caught a glimpse of a figure but couldn’
Keanna stumbled as she absorbed the information. “That person was Neil!” Looking back at it, it was around that time Neil started entering the quiet library. “I was always worried and wondered if he had safely escaped, but there was no way I could have asked anyone. The soldiers that were looking for him threatened me to keep my mouth shut about the incident.” That day was imprinted in Keanna’s memory. It wasn’t something easily forgotten, but with a bloodied face and a hoarse, pained voice, she wouldn’t easily recognize Neil. He was always near her…if only she knew sooner… “Why do you think he told you not to remind me of it?” she sniffled. Silvia held her hands and gave a gentle squeeze, giving her a warm smile. “His Majesty must have wanted you to remember it on your own.” It was the first time in a long time she was in the company of another. She couldn’t ask anyone about him, the risk of him being pursued was still great. There was no sign of him being dragged away, so sh
Keanna began pacing, Neil’s condition heavy on her mind.“Your Highness.” a small voice called out, slightly frightening Keanna. She opened the door to see a maid holding a bundle of clothes.Feeling anxious, she began peeling off her garments and changing into the ones the maid provided. After changing, he made haste to the meet spot, tightly clutching the hood of the cloak to hide her face and hair. As she reached closer, she saw Clara waving her over.“Our excuse to leave is that we have an emergency at home and you are the maid that will come with me. Do you understand?”“Yes, I understand.” Keanna nodded.“I’ve prepared our horses outside. Let’s hurry,” said Clara as she pushed open the door. They walked to the horses and grabbed the reins.“Have you ever ridden a horse before?”Keanna shook her head, gently patting the head of the horse.“I’ll teach you the simplest way to ride. Follow close behind me.”The two made their way to the palace gates, and the guards stopped them.“Wh
**11 years ago ** “Keanna!” she turned to see her father rushing towards her across the field. “Father?” she questioned as he reached her, confused why he was running. “Come with me now.” he said as he grabbed onto her arm and pulled her toward their tent. As they entered the tent, Keanna felt a tension like no other. There were men scattered around the tent and a man positioned in the middle. She saw her mother kneeling in front of this man, she grew even more confused. Who was he that her parents had to bow? “Is this her?” The man asked. “Yes, my King.” her father replied shakily. The King! The King was here in her father’s tent, why on earth would he be here? He got up and walked towards her, and Keanna immediately lowered her gaze. “Mmm, I’ll accept her,” he turned his head towards his men and continued. “Throw her into the harem.” Keanna’s head whipped to the side in her father’s direction as she couldn’t believe what she heard. She expected her father to protest to
The warm sun touched her skin. She couldn’t remember when last she’d felt it. Her entire body felt sore, as if they had beaten her up. She snuggled into the soft pillows inhaling the fresh scent, suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her hands as she stretched to pull the blankets over her. She fell back asleep. Keanna opened her eyes and was greeted by the warmth of the sun. Her room was in the deserted place of the harem, no sunlight could reach her. She felt a sharp pain in her palms again, she looked down to see they bandaged her hands. The only thing she remembered was vomiting on the Prince’s shoulder. She dreaded what would become of her for that. There wasn’t any way to know what was happening as the harem was quiet when it’s usually bubbling with energy. A bird landed on the window, chirping. Keanna hearing it, once again realized this room didn’t belong to her and with that, she rose from the bed. As soon as her feet touched the soft carpet, pain shot through her right foot.
Neil awoke in a sour mood upon realizing the warmth he’d held in his arms was gone. He rose from the bed and was hit by a throbbing headache, which felt all too familiar.Pressing his head into his hand, he tried to suppress his rising anger. How many times had she tried to run? Who does he have to kill for letting her out?“Servant.”He called out and Keanna, who was sitting at the foot of the bed, raised her head. Neil stared at her, wondering why she was there.“Come.”She rose to her feet and moved towards him hesitantly. Neil who was watching her move timidly thought the wounds reopened.“Does it hurt?”“No.”“I will check myself.”He placed her on the bed and knelt before her to inspect her palms.“Your Majesty, how could you kneel? In front of a woman like me?”It made no sense to Keanna why this man, who was King, was knee
Keanna shivered in Neil’s arms as she saw a smile rise on his lips. He wasted no time in devouring her lips. “Mmph!” Neil tightened his hold on Keanna, keeping her still. Since her hands had nowhere to go except his shoulders, she wrapped her arms around his neck. It’s hot. She felt the heat move from her fingers to her lips, from his lips touching hers. It traveled throughout all parts of her body, burning like never before. He plunged his tongue into her mouth with no hesitation. He began kissing her more aggressively when she tried to break free. With his arm still wrapped around her waist, Keanna felt relieved. She felt she could rest now that she’s being protected by him. Keanna opened her eyes and looked at the harem over his shoulder. Three years had passed by quickly. There was no place between those nobles for her, she’s the only thing worthless one there. A little girl of no value who was only a pebble in one’s path. She had no one to protect her except for a young se
Keanna woke at the sound of shuffling feet in the room. When she opened her eyes, she came face-to-face with an elderly woman carrying a basin.“Are you awake?”As the woman approached her, Keanna caught the scent of roses which came from the basin. She tried sitting up but groaned as her body was sore.“My lady, the King has asked that you rest today. Shall I prepare you a bath?”“Hmm, who are you?” Keanna groaned out.She placed the basin on the nightstand and bowed before Keanna.“This is our first meeting, my lady. My name is Silvia and from today onwards, I will serve you. Please call upon me if you need anything.”She couldn’t believe her ears and bolted upright despite the pain.“Ah… that can’t be right. I’m not someone to look after.”Silvia smiled gently at the young concubine.“Madame is most definitely someone to
“Didn’t I tell you, Keanna?”She flinched at his tone and went stiff.“Yes, your royal highness.”“You are my only love, my only wife.”“I am not worthy of such title, My King.”“Why do you think that? My love?”Keanna felt her heart pinch at the endearment and the sad tone in his voice.“I am not of noble birth. My family is from a small nomadic tribe. When my father refused to give my mother to the late King, he threatened them and my father, he…he offered me.”She choked out a light sob as the words came out. She was close to tears, thinking of the day her father handed her over.“And they sent you away?”“…I am just not suited for this place.”Neil dropped his hand from her face and felt his sadness deepen at her words. Finding it to be ironic, he laughed. Keanna raised her head, looking a
