I scoffed. "Meredith. I received a message of protection from those two over there. Are you telling me that I have to give something in return?"

Meredith clicked the roof of her tongue in irritation. "You didn't think it wasn't without cost, did you?" She shook her head. "Fourth generation, we are witches. Witches don't give. We take. You should know this by now. Didn't your dear mother teach you? Isn't that why you have our bloodline flowing through you? I have said too much. We don't have much time. Are you in or out?"

Is this why they have been silent about the rogues in this town? They have been in it all along! They weren't as good as they portrayed themselves as being. They were just supernaturals who didn't involve themselves unless there was something in it for them.

"We aren't giving you our child. We will protect ourselves. We don't need your help." Liam pulled me back a little.
