Zaliver’s eyes met mine as he talked to the doctor; his face was serious and determined. I looked back at him, hoping my expression would tell him that I wanted to know what was going on, but he looked away. I sighed and kicked my feet. Why wouldn’t they tell me what was wrong? I’d been fine in the morning when he was here and as soon as he left I just . . . Fell into a funk, but I was fine.

Hearing his voice had made me extremely happy and then all of a sudden, it felt like I was getting torn apart from the inside. Maybe he was right—I needed to shift more, but I’ve never heard of anything like this. I needed to talk to my wolf, but for that to happen, the drugs had to be out my system first.
