It never failed to amaze him how quickly things went to shit, Rhett thought grimly as he crouched in the shadows of the doorway of a solicitor’s office. The bay windows on either side created an indented entranceway, but it was a fragile shelter and the car lights as the Van Helsings’ patrol arrived swept across him. He was lucky that he was black. He closed his eyes to prevent the back-reflection, despite how vulnerable that made him, reliant on his other senses to let him know what was happening around him and if he was in danger.

With his white fur, Heath was most easily spotted in the night. Cameron’s deep red blended more easily into darkness, and Rhett was a walking, growling shadow. He’d seen Heath take shelter between two cars and then the werewolf soldiers, predictably, spot him. Rhett had been about to reveal himself when the Van Helsings had arrived, and the werewolf soldiers and Heath had fled.
