5. First day of work

9.36 am.

Just one look at the time and Daisy knew she had screwed up.

If there was one thing Elijah hated more than lying backstabbers, it was tardy people who had no sense of punctuality.

And currently, he categorized her as both.

She stood up, the sudden action making blood rush to her head and she instantly sat back down.

She needed food. Actual food and not those ramen shit.

Peeking inside the twins' room she found them still sleeping.

She contemplated on whether to wake them up or not. While she knew they needed proper rest, she also couldn't leave without informing them.

"Ezra, baby?" She gently shook him.

"Mom?" He struggled to open his eyes. Daisy felt a pang of guilt hit her for interrupting his sleep, again.

"I'm going to work, sweetheart." She whispered so Emma wouldn't be disturbed. "I'll be back before dinner. Call me if you need anything, okay?"

He nodded, going back to sleep the very next moment.

Daisy doubted he would even remember this conversation after waking up. So, she left a note just in case.

It took her almost half an hour to reach the office. She had wanted to eat breakfast on her way but couldn't afford to waste one more second.

Speaking of food, she really needed to go grocery shopping tonight. At the rate the twins were eating takeout, they would fall sick soon.

Daisy was glad when she reached the office and no one seemed to give her a second glance.

It assured her that they hadn't yet associated her with the CEO's ex-wife. But she knew the peace was temporary.

Sooner or later, Elijah would make it public knowledge and he would make sure to make her suffer while doing it.

As Daisy pushed the huge glass door open, a sudden gust of cold wind greeted her.

Kingston Inc. was one of the leading companies internationally. If it was any other situation, she would have been ecstatic to land a job here.

But now she was filled with nothing but dread. She knew Elijah's character well, he didn't have the ability to let go of the past nor did he try to.

But what other option did she have?

"Daisy," someone tapped her shoulder, making her look back. She was met with Silas, a boyish grin adorning his face. "Welcome to the team."

"Thanks." The corner of her lips lifted, too. She adored that kid. She was glad to find he hadn't changed at all in the last six years.

He was only 18 when he started as an intern here. It was only supposed to be a summer job but his talent was too rare to let him go.

So, Elijah offered him the job permanently, allowing him flexible hours so he could graduate from university at the same time.

"This is your office." He led her to a small cubicle on the top floor, right next to Elijah's room. "And those are yours, too. Company provided." He said, pointing to the boxed laptop and phone placed on the table.

Daisy looked around, loving every part of her new workplace. She had never before worked in such a professional setting.

It was always odd jobs for her. She had only ever worked as a waitress, shopkeeper, or occasional freelancer.

All she hoped now was that Elijah would maintain professionalism and this could easily pass as her dream job.

A loud ringing captured her attention and she looked at the source to find the intercom ringing.

She didn't have to pick it up to know who it was. "Hello?" She spoke softly.

Elijah didn't care for the pleasantries though. Instead, his commanding voice came from the other end.

"In my office. Now."
