CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO

Emma stood still like time froze, staring up at the ceiling. Morris was beside her, trying to hold her hand, his eyes trained on her face.

For a moment, there was silence. Emma's mind was racing with questions, doubts, and fears. She needed answers, but she didn't know where to start.

Finally, she turned to Morris. “How did we meet?” she asked, her voice low.

Morris looked at her, confusion written all over his face. “What do you mean?” he asked.

Emma took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to say. “I mean, did you seek me out on purpose? Or did we meet by chance?”

Morris's face went blank. “I don't understand,” he said.

Emma's heart sank. She had hoped that Morris would understand what she was getting at, but it seemed like he was either playing dumb or genuinely didn't know.

“You just heard Clyde and by what he said, it can only mean that you sort after me,” Emma said, her voice shaky.

Morris's eyes widened in surprise. “Surely, you can't believe what he's saying
