Anya transformed back to her human form and ran to her porch to see if she could convince Maya who had just ended things not to do so. Her porch was quiet and empty. The rest of the environment was quiet too, no singing of birds not a sign of them on the trees in front of Anya's house. The breeze too had ceased. It's as if nature itself knew that something bad had happened. Standing there confused, she glanced at her door and it reminded her of the evening they kissed for the first time and she felt her heart breaking into tiny unfixable pieces. She placed a hand on her left breast as if it would cushion the effect of what had happened as tears made their way down her face in free reign. The weight of the heartbreak weakened her knees and she landed like a sack of cloth on the floor as lost control of her voice. She sobbed loud for all the lost she has ever been as a human: her parents, Emma, Annalise, now Maya. Being a werewolf has taken more from her than what she had gained.
The rest of the week at school were days of awkwardness for Anya. She didn’t know how to act around Maya. Maya, on the other hand was not interested in making it easy. She would pass Anya's class up to ten times a day and pretend as if she didn't know her. On Thursday, Anya was walking down the corridor and Maya was walking towards her in the opposite direction. Anya was planning to say "hello" with a smile and walked past her. But when Maya drew nearer, it dawned on her that Maya wasn't interested in saying hi. She strolled passed her like there was no one on the corridor. Anya couldn't believe herself. She walked to her class dumbfounded. During the break period, as usual, Caleb and Anya were together in her empty classroom, Anya told her what happened. Caleb responded, " I was about to tell you the same thing. She did this to me and have been doing it since Tuesday Morning. I understand that she is scared for her life, but…" his thought trailed off as he shook his head slowl
"I… Maya…" that was all he could say.Anya stood there, her expression a mixture of confusion and concern.Caleb dropped the piece of snack he was about to munch on and stared in horror at the sheer amount of blood staining Vincent's shirt. "Whose blood is that?" Anya finally managed to ask, her voice trembling.Vincent looked up at them, tears glistening in his eyes, and uttered the name that sent shockwaves through the air, "Maya."Anya felt her knees go weak, and she sank back into her seat to avoid collapsing."Maya…" she whispered, her voice barely audible, her hand clutching her chest as if trying to hold her heart together. As her eyes remained closed, a whirlwind of emotions swirled within her. She was lost, drowning in a sea of disbelief and sorrow. But just as a coherent thought began to form, Caleb beat her to it. By the time Anya opened her eyes, she was met with the sight of Caleb lifting Vincent off the ground, a mixture of anger and concern etched across his face. Vinc
The doctor delivered the news, observing Anya's face transition from surprise to impassivity. The revelation didn't shock her; she had always intuited that Vincent hadn't shared the whole story. Her role seemed to be keeping the situation from spiralling out of control, which wasn't the case for Caleb."What do you think happened?" Caleb inquired, taking a few steps toward the doctor."There was a fall, which impacted her head. Additionally, she suffered a broken hand, but that doesn't quite add up," the doctor explained."Was she bleeding when she arrived here?" Caleb probed further."Yes, there were bruises, and the most significant one was in her brain. We've addressed that issue. The broken hand wasn't an open wound, so there was no bleeding," the doctor responded, maintaining focus on the duo. When it became evident that no more questions were forthcoming, he excused himself and departed for his office.Caleb and Anya stood in silence for several moments, a pause only broken by t
The city night had deepened, casting a shroud over the unfolding events. As Caleb and Anya stepped into the bustling police department, the air seemed heavy with anticipation. They approached the front desk, where a tired officer glanced up at them."Can we help you?" the officer asked with a hint of weariness in his voice."We're looking for any recent reports of car accidents," Caleb replied, his gaze steady."Sure, give me a moment," the officer said, typing into his computer. After a brief pause, he looked up again. "There was a report of a hit-and-run incident about two days ago. A car collided with a pedestrian, and the driver fled the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital."Caleb and Anya exchanged a glance. Two days ago... that's far say. Maya was injured today. The pieces were far from falling into place. "Was there no car accident today, during the early evenings, to be precise?" Anya asked. The officer shook his head. He went further to discuss the only accident that
As Caleb and Anya stepped out of the dense forest, tendrils of tension lingered palpably in the air around them. The moon cast an eerie glow over the city's streets, now hushed in a stark departure from the chaos they had left behind. With hearts still pounding from the recent confrontation, they walked side by side in silence, lost within the labyrinth of their own contemplations.Anya's voice shattered the quietude, her determination cutting through. "We can't let Maya's situation go unanswered. Vincent's version of events doesn't hold water. Maya attacking him? Something's not right. We have to unearth the truth, and we have to do it fast."Caleb's response was a resolute nod, his features etched with resolve. "Agreed. We'll delve deeper into this mystery. We owe Maya that much.""By the way, one of us needs to stay home from school tomorrow, Anya silently communicated. Tomorrow morning, she'll wake up disoriented and starving. Plus, she'll need a change of clothes. Though I'm unsu
Anya and Caleb had decided that watching a movies was a good way to pass time while they waited for the news of Maya's waking up. They had their eyes glued to Anya's television screen to a horror movie —Caleb’s choice — when Anya's phone vibrated. Caleb's eye glanced at the wall clock and he noted that it was past 8 pm at night. Anya tore her eyes from the screen and reached for her phone on the centre table. Her grip tightened around her phone, the screen lighting up with an incoming text. The air seemed to still for a moment before their heart began to race, the message pulling them into a mix of emotions. It was from the hospital."Maya's awake. You need to be here now."A rush of relief intermingled with urgency surged through them. They didn't waste a second to dash out of Anya's apartment to the road, immediately raising their hand to hail a taxi, trembling slightly as they gave the driver the address. The city lights painted streaks of colour across the darkened sky as
Anya and Caleb sat very close to Maya's bed as she slept, her bosom rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Her face was serene as she slept as if there was nothing to be worried about. Both had their eyes on her, worry etched into their faces. After sitting in minutes of total solitude, Anya broke her gaze on her lover, her former lover, closing her eyes slowly. She didn't know if this was a good time to start afresh or to just ignore everything and allow time to do its thing. It was as if Caleb read her mind when he broke the silence to chip in his two cents, his eyes still on a napping Maya. "You can start afresh with her, given that her mind isn't awake yet. You can even control or keep her in love with you, and wipe away the other parts of her memory that knows." He finished his gaze on the sleeping beauty unwavering. Anya opened her eyes slowly, dragging it to Caleb's face. Anya took her time to read his facial expression which looked serious and stern, until she saw a gentle
