When we are halfway down the hall, I look over and see Mom also has Jasper pinched by the tricep as well. He is wincing in pain, but not trying to get away from her. It reminds me of the time he and I got caught smoking in the locker room when we were in high school. Mom didn’t let Lily come to the surface then, but the pinch hurt just as bad.

Time turns into a blur of events. Mom comes in and takes Dad out of the room. When they come back, Dad is no longer covered in blood. Jasper sits next to me and puts his hand on my shoulder while I rock Zara in my lap. Mom tries to tell me something, but I don’t hear what she’s saying. I close my eyes and hold my sweet little mate close to my chest. The noise in the room fades away until all that’s left are Zara’s whimpers. I open my eyes and look around. The sun is almost set.
