While we bathe, Aurora and I talk about everything she went through because of Cassandra. She tells me about how she met her father, and her forced transition into a vampire so they could escape. I recount my own story for her, and her eyes, which are back to their normal mismatched colours, go wide in alarm when I reveal how the void weapons could actually injure me. I stare grumpily at the diamonds hanging from my ears. Sure, they’re stunning, but at what cost? “If you take them out for longer than a couple minutes, they will heal over, so make sure you always have a pair in,” Harlow says cheerfully. I nod at her in the mirror, turning my head from side to side; they are gorgeous and the pain was minimal so I’ll get over it. There’s a knock on the closet door and I freeze as the scent of fresh blood hits me. My fangs ache painfully and Danika rears her head, throwing herself at the barricade in my mind. The room springs into action, the guards that are left move forward immediately to host up Kieran’s unconscious body.“Take him to the infirmary,” Samael orders, “Make sure he’s put in the room next to Inez.” They nod once, running out with Kieran, and Samael turns to Seth, “Bring me Adelaide.” The witch with Seth opens a portal and they both step through it instantly. Samael stares down at me, his bloody fingers brushing my cheek, and I lean into him, his touch causing my heart rate to pick up. He glances up at Adrian and Dimitri and sighs, “go wait in the infirmary. If either Kieran or Inez wake up, come find us.”They both nod and speed out of the room, leaving us alone. I knew we weren’t alone as soon as I reached the broken-down door, and yet I let Aurora walk out into an ambush anyway. I could have taken her upstairs when I sensed their presence, and we would be flying away right now.I watch with panic as she drops to her knees to comfort Eli. Cassandra hovers over next to her portal, watching the scene unfold with excitement in her bright blue eyes. I’m in a standoff of sorts; desperate to protect my girl, but forced to leave her vulnerable while I fight off at least three dozen vampires.I know it will be easy to kill them, but I also know that once they’re all dead, Aurora will be gone. Bending down, I place a kiss on her forehead and move my lips to her ear, “I am so sorry I let this happen, my love. It feels like my entire body turns to ice; the pain is sharp and debilitating, my blood runs cold and begins to spill from the wound in my chest, soaking my already crismon-stained clothes. I wrench the dagger out, dropping it to the floor, where it splatters droplets of blood across the stone.“Did it work?” I ask my dad in confusion. I’m still alive and the pain is rapidly subsiding. I look down at the bleeding hole in my chest and watch it heal, leaving no evidence behind except my ripped and bloody shirt.He opens his mouth to answer, but at that moment, the door bangs open again and another witch barrels in, “Dean! After running for about an hour, we emerge from the forest, and Danika slows as she comes up on a riverbank, my dad gives her a few pats on the back, “Stop here for a minute. I think the wolfsbane is pretty much out of my system now,” he says, jumping off and removing his shirt. I’ve never seen such a large man before, there’s no other word to describe him except big. He’s so big. His shoulders are wide and bulky, his stomach ripples with solid muscle, and his legs could rival tree trunks.Danika and I both look away awkwardly as he begins to remove his pants, and I’m filled with anxiety when I remember we ripped my clothes to shreds during our shift.
