Start acting like a father, she said. What a laugh! The words my father said echoed in my mind, their bitter taste lingering on my tongue. I destroy everything I touch, according to him. Maybe he was right. Strange now that I think about it, I never really cared for the Barrington fortune, nor for the company. But now that everything might be taken away, I am left with a nagging worry, like a knot tightening in my chest. How would I be able to provide for Destiny and this child if I lost it all?

“She’ll take your child and you will be left penniless and alone.” Those words stuck in my mind on repeat like a broken vinyl record, the scratchy sound echoing through my thoughts.

But when I look into the depths of those green eyes, looking at me with all the sincerity of her soul, I want to believe her, to believe that no matter what, she will stay. The soft touch of her hand on my arm sent a shiver down my spine, a gentle warmth seeping into my skin.
