Perplexed, I repeated questioningly, "My father?" I wasn't sure if I heard him correctly.

Growing up, all I heard about him was that he was a beast that had forced himself on my mother and had his way with her. I never imagined that, apart from hearing about my father in the same sentence as a monster, I would hear about him in a different sentence entirely different from the ones I had grown up with. I had no idea if he was even dead or alive, or who he was or even looked like. There was nothing to tell me anything about him.
