-The Final Battle-I forced myself to rise in the late afternoon instead of full dark. Paul had already left to see after the Wolfpack and since other Vampires didn't rise until the sun had fully set, I had a jump on the day. I decided to spend it with my daughter.Unless I was off handling some Vampire mission, my daughter was constantly with me. I had a few hours of daytime and BJ was in a good mood, so I decided it would be a good time to take care of some grocery shopping. I did most of my shopping online, although the girls and I did enjoy overnight excursions to New York, Miami, or Los Angeles. But if I only needed applesauce and diapers, I drove to the nearest grocery store.I put on big sunglasses and a cap because it was still daylight and I didn't want anyone to recognize me. And by that, I mean that I didn't want one of the humans from any nearby territories to see me walking around in the sun. Revealing to the mass of Vampires that I was a day walker was still a no-no.
I put in a CD of Disney's Frozen because no one got tired of those songs. I was singing and Julie was almost singing enthusiastically with me. Then I got a message from Tyler through our mental link.Kim. Are you at the house?Hey, Tyler. No, on my way home. Why? Is everything okay?We got some trouble in Northside."What kind of trouble?" I spoke out loud because Julie was confused that I had suddenly stopped singing…as if she wouldn't be confused that I was now having a random conversation out of thin air. But she was my child and become used to these things. We got a new resident in the safe house about a week ago. It was a woman from San Diego."California?"Yep, Tyler replied. "And why in the world do we have people from clear across the country at our safe house?"That's the issue. Through our mental connection, I could tell that Tyler seemed far from happy. We shouldn't have her in our safe house. It's creating one hell of a conflict because her Master just arrived to
People got killed when security was breached. People sometimes got killed even when security wasn't breached. We took the safety of our residents very seriously. This particular building housed fourteen people—fifteen counting the female from California.Jason led the way up the walkway and pressed in the code to open the door for Tyler and me before he took up the rear. The entry points were manned by surveillance cameras, which fed to an off-site security firm. Inside was a 24-hour-a-day security guard. It hadn't always been this way, but I had learned the hard way that sometimes even the people you are working hard to protect will stab you and the other residents in the back. So now we take precautions.I didn't know the security guard. He was one of Voss' boys. He met us at the entrance and looked a little scared. He was a Vampire so I didn't blame him. No Vampire wanted to be in the same room with Tyler, but she stayed back and kept her tats covered by her leather jacket. Jaso
I was surprised when I saw the woman sitting on the edge of a small love seat. I startled her so that she leaped to her feet with a soft squeak until she saw that it was me and not Bernard.I had expected a pretty, young woman that Bernard favored sexually or perhaps one who was a good moneymaker out on the streets. Instead, I saw an elderly woman who was probably much older than she looked—and she looked pretty damn old.But she was spry and moved with the speed of someone half her age. Judging by her wrinkles and white hair, I would put her in her seventies."My name is Kim, and I'm the Master who runs this safe house. Sorry to have scared you, but I have an angry Council member in the waiting room, and I need to know what's going on."She wrung her hands nervously but nodded and sounded calm when she spoke. "My name is Lydia. I ran away from Bernard four months ago. I tried to get as far away from him as I could. I heard about you. He and his liege mentioned…" She lowered her ey
"I can't do the things that a young woman can do." She peeked at me from beneath long lashes. "You know—in the bedroom. I haven't had sex in many years. Bernard is true to me so that means he hasn't had sex in years. I don't ask this of him. I don't expect this, but it is his will.""Lydia, what do you think Bernard will do if you don't go home with him? Now that he knows that you are here, will he kill us all in order to get to you?""Yes," she said quickly. "He will kill you all. And I suppose that is my answer. I must return with him, and maybe I will have another opportunity to escape before I become too old or he turns me once and for all.""I can talk to him. Maybe he will listen to me. I'm not afraid of Bernard or his death threats. I have…well, I have someone similar in my life."She nodded. "Yes, because you too are gold."I stared at her in shock. "Gold. What do you know about being gold?""There is not much that I know about it. It's not a subject that is broached by t
"I'm sorry," I said quickly, "I didn't mean to insinuate—"He held up his hand. "No. I understand. The bond makes it difficult to live without the one you are bound to. The torture of having her leave would have been too much for her frail human nature. It was never meant for humans so I broke it to prevent her physical torture."My eyes grew wide. What? Wait…Did he just say that he broke their bond? "A love bond can be broken?""Oh yes. Neratomay will form many bonds, but they weaken and eventually disappear if they haven't been fortified with contact or a blood pact. But when a blood pact has been performed—what you called a love bond—then it is necessary to do a bond dissolution. It's very difficult and very painful, although one party can take on all of the pain—as I did.""I never knew such a thing existed," I said in awe. "And what about other bonds; ones between a sire and progeny?""Most Neratomay don't have a need to break their bonds and so many wouldn't consider it. But
Later that night Tyler and I were sitting in Adirondack chairs at the Wolf Lodge where there was a party going on for my First Lieutenant, Ran. Tomorrow he would no longer be a Werewolf and would be returning to his Vampire body. He had been well liked by the Wolves who were now throwing him a going away party."She might look like Monica and she might have her memories, but that thing is dead inside," Tyler said while taking a drink of beer. "She has no conscience. Even Johan had a human spark and he was a monster."She was right. That thing walking around in my friend's body was not Monica. The ladies had not just been my food. Monica had been my assistant, my confidante, but more importantly my friend. Now what walked around in her skin was something that I didn't even want to be around. If I felt this way, then it had to run deeper for Tyler. They had been like sisters. I forced down a long swig as we both got quiet, deep in our own thoughts.Lights had been strung up along the
I mulled that over. "That's not a bad idea. Someone has to keep us in the loop, and those snotty-ass Europeans still hate us—okay, me." I will only take partial blame for the havoc Alexis and Athena wreaked on the Barcelona Council, which caused me to be permanently barred from entering Spain. This was compounded because I later went to Poland with a crew of Vampires and we dished out some whup-ass on a bunch of murdering, raping Werewolves."Paul says the Vampire Councils are pressuring him to send the Wolfpack to hunt the rogues," Tyler stated. "But he told us that he won't be rushed. He says that the vamps dealt with the rogue attacks in secret for this long so they can wait a bit longer until he's sure the Pack is stable."That information was a rare bit of news. Paul rarely spoke to me about what he does with the Wolfpack. He doesn't want the Neratomay picking through my head trying to get information until he's ready to give it. He thinks the less I know the better. And he's ri
