The next day, I was in my room locked up as he says. Curled in a ball on the bed, sobs wracked my body. My best friend could die and it was all my fault. I should have been the one stabbed, not innocent Alex. He didn't deserve this pain. I promise to go after she was asleep at night.

After night fell, I crept downstairs while my father snored drunkenly. Slipping out the back door, I ran to the hospital. I had to see Alex again, even if he'd never forgive me for what happened.

I crept back into Alex's hospital room late at night, needing to be near him. His mother sat keeping watch, her kind eyes full of sympathy as she took in my bruised and battered face.

"Oh sweetie, what happened?" she asked gently, guiding me to sit as I winced in pain.

I stared at the floor, ashamed. "My father...he was angry about yesterday."

His mother tilted my chin up, her expression lined with sorrow. "You dear girl, you don't deserve this cruelty." Her empathy made my tears spill over.
