In the hospital, after coming out of the operating room, Trevis's wounds had been bandaged up. When the anesthesia wore off, Trevis woke up. I wasn't sure if he noticed me because, upon waking, he silently gazed at the ceiling with tears in his eyes.

I held his hand, unable to hold back my tears either. My Trevis must have regretted bringing me home all those years ago, right? If it weren't for me, none of this would have happened.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Police officers stood there, showing their badges.

"Both of you, please come with us," one of them said.

I knew we were being taken to the police station for questioning. When Trevis tried to get up, I reached out to help him, but he moved away from my hand.

He said, "I'm dirty."

Then, he limped forward on his own.

Once I finished giving my statement, the police released me. However, Trevis was temporarily detained on charges related to the assault. I understood that even if the chauffeur didn't lose his life,
