What was meant to be a fun trip to the Valley turned into a nightmare in one day. Adea was more than shaken by her sister’s actions. Manipulating her into doing her bidding or inflicting terrifying dreams upon her in her sleep was one thing, but Adea never thought she would have the capacity to cause her such physical harm.
Adea spent the next two days recovering from her injury. By the time her parents arrived at the Valley, she was well enough to leave the campsite, but they could see that something was wrong with her. Still, something in Adea’s mind was keeping her from spilling exactly what Lyda did to her. Fear? Pity? She did not know, but when they pressed her to tell them what happened, all she could say was that it was an accident.
Nobody had seen Lyda again until later that day. Adea was apprehensive at first, but like every time some
Adea was speechless, her heart pounding so hard in her chest that she could feel it in the rib Lyda had broken. Eran’s proposal caught her off guard. Typically, one would not be asked to marry until after taking their vows, but otherwise was not unheard of. Regardless, Adea was overwhelmed with excitement, the blood beneath her face running hot as Eran cast a sideways glance at her. Even Alyra was awash with elation, her hands over her mouth as tears began to seep from her eyes. The only one to not give the slightest hint of a reaction was Adea’s father. Eran found it difficult to look Matthias in the aged, gray eyes, and he only stared back with an emotionless face and his arms crossed, as if trying to get some sort of response from the young man.Amidst the awkward silence, Matthias turned his head to look back at his oldest daughter sitting
“Did my father give you an answer?” Adea asked as she and Eran sat on the front porch of the cottage. The sky had fallen dark blue and the stars began to peek out.“No,” Eran replied with a swallow. “Not yet.”“What did he say to you?”“Well,” Eran began rather nervously. “He said he would consider my proposal once you’ve taken your vows.”Adea giggled softly. “Don’t let him get to you. That’s just his way of testing your patience.”“I’m not bothered. I’d wait for you as long as I must.”Adea smiled as she rested her head on his shoulder. She had never felt
Adea hurried back inside, allowing the thought of what happened to fill her with anger, enough to give her the courage to face her sister. She announced her presence by throwing open the cellar door as hard as she could and storming down the stairs.“Lyda!” she shouted, her voice echoing in the dark, confined area. Lyda turned her head to see her sister approaching but continued to hide eye from view. Adea clenched her fists. “How dare you!”“What are you talking about?” Lyda grumbled.“You know damn well what I’m talking about!” Adea cried in a tone of voice that surprised even her. “How could you even think about trying to steal Eran from me!”“Steal him from you?!” Lyda fired back. &ld
Lyda did not sleep a wink that night or the following morning. The atmosphere of the cellar did not get any less dark or heavy after her mother took Adea away. Once the cellar door had been closed and the others were out of sight, Matthias snatched Lyda up by the front collar of her silk garment, stretching it as he hoisted her up and threw her onto the bed. Lyda cried out as her head banged against the wall and could only stare up at her father’s furious face, unable to hide her intimidation.Matthias had demanded to know what she was thinking when she threatened her sister’s life like that, but Lyda could only lie there in silence, shocked by what she had done, but no matter how hard she searched for the feeling, she felt no shame.Matthias stood over her, continuing to grill her relentlessly over her actions before finally questioning the n
The return trip was even quicker as Matthias made haste across the mountain paths. His mind swarmed with thoughts wondering what the Mistress was talking about. All that mattered was that he got Lyda to the hall as fast as possible. As he emerged from the tree line along the ridge approaching the cottage, he spotted his wife and youngest daughter out in the garden. What were they doing out there instead of resting, he asked himself. He rode into the backyard, dismounting his horse before he even got to the stables. Alyra and Adea looked up from the garden.“Where is Lyda?” he huffed as he ran over to them.“In the cellar,” Alyra pointed toward the cottage. “You locked her down there, remember?”Matthias shook his head as he charg
Adea let out a scream as she quickly backed into her parents’ bedroom. She slammed the door shut and twisted the lock just as Lyda threw herself at the door. She banged against it ferociously, swearing and demanding her sister open it. Adea fell back onto the floor as Lyda began putting the knife through the door. She continued to scream, her head darting this way and that as if looking for a way out.In a matter of seconds, Lyda had broken the door to pieces. She kicked the splintered door off its hinges as she barged into the bedroom. Before she could look around the room for her prey, Adea leapt out from behind the dresser beside the doorway. In a fit of terror, she unwittingly threw a punch at Lyda’s face. Lyda grunted in shock and swung her hunting knife at Adea’s head. Adea ducked and ran out of the room as fast as she could, screaming at the top of her lungs as she charged down the
Adea’s ears hummed and whirred as she slowly began to regain consciousness. Her eyes struggled to focus; her vision was hazy and disoriented. Her surroundings were pitch dark and quiet, but she could feel the cold breeze against her flesh, telling her that she was outside. As more of her senses returned, she realized that she was lying on a hard but smooth surface of rock and that she had been stripped completely naked. She was still too disoriented to make out her surroundings. She tried to move, but that was when she noticed that her limbs were bound in place. Her arms were spread out on either side and her legs were both pinned straight forward. She began to panic when she turned her head this way and that, only to be met with the frighteningly familiar sight of stone slabs perched upward in a circle, and she was right in the middle of it.Adea w
Adea groaned as her body was battered by the fall. That was when she registered the pain in her ankle, which shot up her leg when she tried to move. She must have sprained it in the fall. She then remembered the cracking sounds and realized that she was lying on top of a nest of something small, narrow and hard. Adea reached underneath her to grab one of the objects. It was almost too dark to see anything, but there was no mistaking the rock-like texture of a bone. She was lying in the rotting remains of a Human skeleton.Adea shivered and let out a squeal of disgust as she jumped to her feet, limping as she was unable to put the full weight of her body on her sprained ankle. That was when she looked around at her surroundings. It did not take long to realize that she had fallen into some sort of cavern, the only light coming from a small opening in the center of the roof where it flowed in like a spotligh
