A few days later while I was working on a tight deadline, I received a call from an unknown number.

"Lillian Cheslin, we need to talk..."

I frowned. "Xander Harris?"

"Yes, Lilly, your parents contacted me last night, and they didn't want you to break up with me either." Xander had purposely softened his voice on the phone, but there was still a lingering pride in his tone. "I was just doing silly things. I have made it clear to Scarlett that I won't contact her again. Let's get married next year, okay?"

I held the phone more tightly without saying anything.

I could imagine how my parents belittled me in front of him and even begged him for forgiveness last night.

From their point of view, that was how the world worked. Even if Xander had cheated on and betrayed me, I could only marry him because I had lived with him for four years.

"My parents' views don't represent mine. We have broken up," I said coldly, "and I have work to do. If there's nothing else, I'll hang up."
