Thirty-three

Penny stood beside Lyle as the procession for his father's burial took place. It had been the two of them since he could remember. His mom eloped with a younger man, and unfortunately for her, they had an accident and died on the spot.

His father was devastated but for him, he could care less. She had gotten what she deserved. He dropped flowers into the grave where his father's casket was being lowered into the ground.

"By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground since from it you were taken; for dust, you are and to dust, you will return.” the priest said as the casket reached the ground. He picked up a handful of sand and threw it in the grave, after which sand was being thrown to cover up the casket. Penny squeezed Lyle's shoulder for support as he wiped the tears off his face.

What a cruel world we are in!
