Chapter 10

Lockton Entertainment’s headquarters occupied an entire office building.

The company knew that they had a new president, and they also knew that the new president was the eldest daughter of the Lockton family.

The usually cramped office was quite empty on such a day. Around one-third of the employees ranging from high positions to low positions were absent.

Half of the ones who came for work had nothing to do and were on the fence about the situation. They wanted to observe the goings on before making their decision.

At 3:00 pm, a red Bentley arrived at the parking lot.

Ruth got out of the car while dressed in a professional dress.

It showed off her slim waist, and her straight, long, and fair legs were adorned by a pair of heels. She looked cool and beautiful.

With an expressionless face, she walked forward. Trailing behind her was a male secretary who was half a head taller than she was. While they walked, he reported the company’s work situation to her. In a show of consideration, he also put a hand on the elevator door to stop it from closing while Ruth went in first.

When they reached the office floor and got out of the elevator, someone hurried over. “I’m sorry, Miss Ruth. I had some tasks on hand and couldn’t make it in time to pick you up.”

Ruth thought. “Wow. How arrogant. She’s just a secretary, and she had stuff to do, so she couldn’t come to pick me up?”

“It’s fine.” Ruth smiled kindly and harmlessly.

When Cecilia Acken, the secretary, saw that Ruth was so easy-going, she scoffed disdainfully in her heart. “It’s just as Mr. Devon had guessed. She doesn’t know anything and is just putting on airs. I’ll get her off her high horse today…”

“Mr. Devon is sick. That’s why he’s not in the company today. He said that he’ll do the handover next week. You can hang around the company for the week and get to know the people here.”

The ears of many of the people on the office floor perked up when they heard this.

This was an order, not a request. Mr. Devon was putting Ruth in place.

No matter what, Ruth was a little too young. She should not have come to the company in such a flashy manner. An unannounced inspection would have put her in a better spot.

Ruth did not stop walking. Her heels made loud clacking sounds against the marble tiles while she said casually, “It’s not as if you can earn a lot of money in this stupid company, anyway. There aren’t really any tasks that Uncle Devon could hand over to me. He’s old, so he should just rest at home. He doesn’t have to bother with these things.”

Cecilia was flabbergasted.

What did Ruth mean by that? Did she just fire Mr. Devon?

How dare she?!

“Also, you’re Uncle Devon’s secretary, aren’t you?” Ruth paused for a moment, but she did not do it to give Cecilia the time to reply. “I’m used to my own assistants. You can go to the finance department to settle the remainder of your salary later.”

Cecilia’s elegant and prideful expression changed, and she asked in a shrill voice, “What’s the meaning of this, Miss Ruth? Are you firing me?”

Ruth was taken aback by her voice. She scowled in displeasure and stopped walking to turn and look at her askance. “Which university did you graduate from? Didn’t they require you to take etiquette classes? Also, how did you end up working for the president with your comprehension levels?”

The rapid-fire questions rendered Cecilia speechless, and her face turned red.

She had to spend some time squashing down her anger before she could reply. “I didn’t do anything wrong. How could you fire me?”

“You ignored your president and did not take your job seriously. That’s your first mistake. You ignored the rules, clocked in for work late, and clocked off work early. That’s your second mistake.

“Should I say more? I can tell you all of the mistakes you made, but if I do, you won’t be able to get your salary and leave with your head held high.”

Ruth’s smile remained as gentle, kind, and harmless as before. “Well? Do you want to hear more?”

Cecilia’s expression changed slightly.

The other employees were in shock.

Cecilia had never respected the company’s rules because she was Mr. Devon’s special assistant. She often arrived to work late and left early, and, when Mr. Devon did not come to the company, she was also always absent.

She often mistreated the new employees and ordered people around as well. All of them were angry at her, but they did not dare to say anything about it.

When they saw Ruth crush her with the demeanor of a domineering tyrant and saw how Cecilia was rendered speechless, many of them were delighted in their hearts.

Of course, many of them were nervous as well.

How did Ruth know all of this?

Ruth cast a cold glance at Cecilia’s expression and tapped on the table of the person closest to them. “Tell all departments to come to the meeting room ten minutes later. They can choose not to come. I won’t force them.”

With that said, she went to the second floor, where the president’s office was.

Then, Cecilia finally snapped out of the daze she had been thrown into by Ruth’s intimidating aura and screeched, “Miss Ruth, I’m Mr. Devon’s assistant, you have no right to fire me!”

Ruth did not stop walking upstairs.

Cecilia chased after her anxiously. “Miss Ruth, you can’t—”

Nathan Flynn, Ruth’s secretary and assistant, blocked her. “Miss Cecilia, a person is only valuable when they know themselves.”

Cecilia’s face turned pale and horrid. “What do you mean?”

“You picked your side, so you should accept the consequences. Mr. Devon fell from power, so how could you think that you’d get out unscathed?”
