Rosalind
I couldn’t believe the look on James' face as he barely paid attention to my words. Was that how unimportant I was? Was slandering me behind his back one of the things he did for fun?“I want a divorce and I want it now.”His eyes snapped to mine as if just listening to me and his brows tightened. “No.”My face clouded with disgust as I glared at him. “What do you mean no? I want a divorce and I want it as soon as possible and you cannot stop me.”He ran a hand through his hair, a move that used to get me excited but just annoyed me as every part of him. “If you don't do this, Rosalind, I will do whatever you want, and answer every request.”Marina gasped beside him. “James-“ she started, but I cut her off.“Since you are offering, I have a request.” I spoke calmly, gaining his attention. He gave me his complete attention and the room tensed as they both waited to say what I was going to say.My eyes met with Marina’s briefly and I could see the irritation in them.“I want you to send Marina away.”Marina gasped, her nostrils glaring in anger. “What? That’s absurd! You are such a vicious person!” She spat at me but James held her back, his gaze still trained on me.I refused to back down from his stare and waited to hear what he had to say to my request. He sighed, breaking our gaze. “I’m sorry Rosalind.” He met my gaze again.“That’s impossible, but if you make another request, I promise to do it as soon as possible.”My teeth gritted against each other. He was going to pick Marina over me. He didn’t even think twice about it.“Then expect my divorce contract.”And with that, I turned around and left, shutting away the outside world as I stormed out of the room and the hospital.Half expecting him to follow me outside to convince me otherwise, I looked back and he wasn’t there. A pained chuckle left my lips as i angrily wiped my tears. Did I really expect James to do that?I thought maybe if I meant something at all, he would chase after me…I shook my head in pain as I retrieved my phone from my bag. I needed a ride and I couldn’t return to that house, not when Marina and James would be there. The phone rang only once as my brother, Chris’ voice came through the speakers. “Hello sis, what’s up?”Taking a shaky sigh, I tried to make my voice seem as normal as I could. “Hey Chris, I’m outside the Central hospital, the one closest to the town mall and I need a ride.”“Oh the one you took me to two years ago, the night of my game?”I nodded despite him not being able to see me. “Yes, that one.” I cleared my throat.“Okay ill be on my way then.” He replied and i sighed again. He paused, and I held my breath, hoping he wouldn’t sense it, but he’s my brother. He knew me more than anyone else.“Are you crying? No, that’s not supposed to be a question. You are crying, Rosalind.”At that moment, a sob left my lips, and I could hear him curse at the other side. I covered my mouth with my hand to stop another sob from escaping while he asked softly.“What happened, Rosa? Please talk to me.”“It’s nothing, Chris, I'm just going to need a good divorce lawyer.”The silence from the other line had me holding my breath and I swallowed hard as his voice came from the other line.“What the hell?” He roared into the phone. “What did that asshole do to you? I’m going to kill that over pampered son of a bitch!” He angrily yelled into the phone.Pulling the phone slightly away, I sniffed and wiped my tears before clearing my throat. “It's really nothing important , Chris. Marina woke up, that's all. So would you be here soon?”The silence reigned again and I pleaded with the heavens to let him drop the topic, but they weren’t that nice.“Wait, he’s going to replace you because that woman woke up? What sort of sick asshole is that? Oh when I see him I’m going to teach him a lesson about taking advantage of people!”I held the phone to my ear, gritting my teeth together to push back the pain. Chris couldn’t do anything to hurt James. The body guards would have shot him before he could.A shaky sigh left my lips. “Can you just come and pick me up please? We can talk about this later.”He sighed heavily, and I could see how angry he was that I was hurt by James.“Okay, Rosa bear. I'll be there faster than you can think.”Muttering a soft thank you and hanging up the call, I rubbed my arms because of the cold. I didn't wait to get a coat before coming here, and now I was freezing. Not wanting to stand still in front of the hospital and close to the two people I hated the most in the world, I walked slowly along the road on the sidewalk.Letting out a sigh, I still tried to wrap my head around the fact that I was getting divorced on my birthday. My birthday, my so-called husband couldn't be bothered to remember. My eyes stung with unshed tears, but I was done with feeling sorry for myself so I blinked them back, but all that didnt matter as right in front of me, an accident happened. Two cars crashed into each other with a force that sent me reeling back. A gasp left my throat as I saw the cars crash into each other and with that sort of collision, the drivers may not make it if someone didn't help.Remembering I was a doctor, I pushed myself and ran towards the cars, just as some people also rushed towards them."Stand back, everyone. I'm a certified doctor and I can't do anything if you are in the way."I waved my identification card in the way and they stepped back after helping pull the first driver out.He was still alive but unconscious with a gash on his forehead and a bleeding thigh with a shard of glass in it. He was injured and I performed a quick first aid on him while another person screamed for an ambulance. The person was the one helping the other driver, and his voice seemed familiar but I pushed that aside, focusing on the patient. The patient let out a groan as I tightened the strip of cloth above his bleeding thigh to stop his bleeding."It's going to be fine." I whispered and the paramedics rushed in to take the drivers for immediate care.Letting out a sigh as the crowd dissipated, I turned to take a good look at the other rescuer. The man turned at the same time and as our eyes met, a gasp left our lips."It's you?!"Rosalind“Shawn?” I gasped, not believing my eyes as those familiar blue orbs met mione and widened in recognition as they landed on me.“Rosalind? Hey.” Shawn broke into a wide smile, one that I had not seen since forever. Shawn used to be my best friend before I met James. so close to the extent people thought we were in love and were going to get married. But he disappeared 3 years ago suddenly and out of contact totally, I almost thought he was died. “How have you been, little Rosa?” He asked, using his nickname for me. I studied his face as we pulled away. He was definitely a little different from the last time i saw him, the day I announced my wedding. His brown and unruly hair was longer, and he had a well groomed facial hair. But his eyes were colder than before. That was what growing up did to us."That is a good question..." I sighed, "how about you? Where have you been? and why you suddenly disappeared and suddenly appears now?" I was happy to see him, and also have a lot
RosalindStaying at Chris’s house was tough, so I rented an apartment as soon as I could. The apartment was fully furnished and it didn't come cheap, but it was cheaper than I thought it could be. It was like a steal. I also got new clothes because I wasn't ready to see James or Marina in that house. Not when I hated James at the moment. It was the day of Shawn’s welcome party and as I applied my makeup in the mirror, the thought of meeting the Lawyer and filing a divorce from the man I've loved for all these years felt like the hardest thing I could ever do. I never imagined that I would have to let go of him, my husband, but he already made it clear that it was nothing to him.Nothing more than a maid.Blinking back my tears so that I wouldn't ruin my neatly done make up, I distracted myself by pushing thoughts of James away and pushed away from the mirror so I could take a look at the whole outfit I picked myself. My figure stood out in the blue midnight dress i wore, showing th
RosalindMarina glared at my father, who looked completely shocked. The onlookers whispered amongst each other and I gritted my teeth in annoyance. What is Marina trying to do? And why to my father? My father’s grey eyes furrowed with confusion as he looked down at Marina, who still had her finger stretched at him.“Who is this? What do you mean by that and why are you pointing at me?” My father questioned, annoyance rubbing off him as we all stared at Marina. How dare she point at my father disrespectfully? It was one thing to treat me like trash, but my father? She must be wishing for trouble.“That’s not a way to address my father, Marina. Is there something you need to say? Then say it without acting like a child.” She looked taken aback by my words, and I knew she hated being told to do. She opened her mouth to speak, but James gave her a look before putting on a wide smile and stretching out a hand to my father, looking more respectful that ever, and nothing like the man who j
Rosalind“Rosalind.” The lawyer who I thought already left called me softly and I turned to her with hope in my eyes. She gave a smile and let out a sigh. But before she could utter another word, a loud round of applause echoed from the guests and I looked up to the stage to find the celebrant, Shawn, giving a warm smile to the guests. He was about to say his speech and he looked confident and smart as he waited for the applause to quiet down, exuding a charm I knew was the reason he had so many guests come to celebrate him.“Thank you, thank you.” His voice came into the speakers, and he began his speech but I couldn’t completely focus, not when the lawyer wanted to say more things, maybe change her mind about being James’ lawyer and pairing up with me instead, although I knew that was unlikely. This was all in vain, coming to the party.I put my hope up, just for them to be squashed under both James’s million dollar shoe, and the lawyer’s pencil heeled ones.A sigh left my lips as
JamesAs I hurriedly pushed Marina away from Rosa’s presence, my heart pounded wildly in my chest at that close encounter with Don, and Marina’s stupid slip up.What sort of mistake was that? “Why are you pushing my chair, James? You need to calm down.” Marina hissed at me, and I let out a frustrated sigh.“Don’t tell me to calm down, Marina. Don’t you know what you almost cost us? Why would you mention something that sensitive in public? Didn’t you think it through?”What she did was an incredibly stupid thing to do and if I wasn’t smart with covering it up, we could have been killed. Who lets a man who we’ve been suspecting know that he’s been the topic of our decision? If he was truly evil, something I still had my doubts about since he was my father in law, he wasn’t going to hesitate to do something to us.We had no defense. In a fight like that, we were going to obviously emerge the losers.“I wasn’t thinking… I was shocked, that's all. That doesn’t give Rosalind the right to t
RosalindA groan left my lips as I regained consciousness, my head throbbing wildly and my throat dry. I raised my hand to touch the side of my head, but it felt heavy, just like every part of my body. The sound of beeping echoed in the room, and my still closed eyes furrowed in confusion. Where am I? I racked my brain to remember the last events, and the only thing I could remember was being at Shawn’s party. Then everything kept coming back to me. First I was at Shawn’s party, then that waiter… James asked to see me then he disappeared into that hallway.I couldn’t find him, and then…I felt a pain in my head and that was it.My eyes fluttered open and I was met with white walls and light, which proved too much to my sensitive eyes.Hospital. I was in a hospital.“She’s up. My Rosa is awake.” The familiar voice of my dad’s reached my ears and I sat up in the bed gently and a pair of hands helped me sit well.James? My brows furrowed as I met with his eyes as he smiled and took his
Rosalind“I choose none because I’ll take care of myself.”I saw how all four faces went from shock to disagreement and they all began talking at once.“Take care of yourself?”“I almost lost you today, Rosalind. Do you think I’ll be okay knowing you may be hurt tomorrow?”“But we need to keep an eye on you, what if it’s worse next time?”“He’s right, I wouldn’t live with myself if something went wrong when I know I could have prevented it.”James’s last comment had my heart clenching painfully. He sounded scared, but I refused to believe my ears.I raised my hand frustratedly. “Can you all just calm down? I’m not a child! I’m an adult and I can take care of myself.”They all kept quiet, looking away guiltily.“Oh God.” I wiped my hand over my face. I would need painkillers after this.“How do you plan to take care of yourself?” Chris asked, looking stony and angry.“Thank you for that question, Chris. I’m an adult. You guys have forgotten that I’m a grown woman, not a child that you
Chapter 14RosalindThe next few days after that, I applied for jobs in several big hospitals nearby, including in the forms that I had the experience of taking care of Marina for three years. It wasn’t enough experience but that was all I had because immediately I graduated, I got married to James. That slimmed my chances of getting jobs, but two hospitals accepted my forms and asked me to come for an interview. Because of my lack of experience, I only got a job, and I was to be the assistant of a doctor.I was going to be my own person working my own hob without anyone’s help.My joy knew no bounds but it was all dashed when I received an email from the interviewer. They decided to cancel my offer. My heart dropped to my feet as I read their reason. They decided to drop the offer because someone complained about my skills as a doctor.I had an idea who it could be. After all, only someone who I have taken care of could give a report about me.Marina. It has to be. Even when I want
