Truth comes out

Getting cleaned up felt like an eternal task. Just when I thought I had wiped away all traces of the previous night, another dried spot emerged, stubborn and inconspicuous. My hair, a tangled mess, proved to be a nightmare to brush and clean.

What I was doing felt unfair. Lucas was awaiting the arrival of a mate who deserved to be the one to initiate sexual activity with him. Guilt gnawed at me; I was just like Alessia, snatching another man away from his mate, even if he had not found her. I couldn't bring myself to ruin someone else's chance at finding a soulmate. Besides, I had lied to him about my identity.

We had no future. Eventually, Lucas would find his mate, and I would be left alone. Life, it seemed, was inherently unjust.

After getting dressed, I returned to my room, and the tantalising aroma of bacon filled the air.<
