The Premiere
By half-past two, she had the whole house cleaned. She put away her dusters and polish and went down to the kitchen. She was just waiting for the kettle to boil when her phone rang.
"Hello"
"Hello darling, are you alright?"
"Hi Nick, I'm fine thanks, just having a cup of tea."
"Well don't dawdle, the car will arrive any minute now, to take you to have your hair done."
"Oh, I forgot about that." Millie paused. "I'm not sure I should go with you."
There was a sigh at the other end of the phone.
"What's happened?"
She recognized his "don't mess with me" tone of voice.
"Nothing has happened."
"Right! In that case, you will be going to have your hair done, and we'll see you at five-thirty. Just enjoy it, Millie."
Nick wasn't sure whether this was first night nerves or whether something had happened when he ended the call and turned to Gabriel.

Millie slept like a log that first night. Without even realising it she moved between Nick and Gabriel all night. Millie went back into the kitchen; she could get out into the back garden from the French windows by the breakfast table. She admired the flowers in their blue ceramic pots, and she could hear the sea now, she could listen to the waves rushing to the beach.It was so warm, and it was only mid-morning, and there was still not a cloud in the sky. Walking along the curving path, Millie could see beautiful flower beds, a pretty tinkling fountain with drops of water which shone in the sun like diamonds. The pub was old, with low beams and whitewashed walls it wasn't too busy, and Nick and Gabriel were greeted with smiles and handshakes by the landlord."It's nice to see you both.
