3. Signed

Sophia felt stupid for thinking that a miracle would happen and Alex would cherish her so much.

He wanted a divorce and just like she had always done, she would listen to him.

Sophia sat down on the floor of the bedroom, he gave her twenty-four hours but she decided to leave that night. Her eyes were fixated on the piece of paper in her hand as tears streamed down her eyes. She had written a letter when she was eighteen, intending to give him but she never got the chance.

Their story started in high school when she fell while they were running in the school's field for P.E. The heavy fall made her end up with a small cut on her lower leg, just below her knee. The story was as vivid as daylight to her.

On her way to the infirmary, someone shouted her name, looking back Sophia's gaze fell on the young guy running towards her. By the time he got to where she stood, he was gasping for breath, attempting to regain his composure.

"Hey," Alex said and let out a breath as he leaned forward, lowering himself and placing his hand on his knees before tilting his head upward to gaze at her.

"Sorry about your injury, I had a novelty bandage in my bag so I went to my class to get it. I hope you don't mind about the bandage" he ruffled his hair, standing straight and looking at her with a smile.

Before she could reject it, he squatted down, peeling the back off and using it to cover her injury gently, his hands trembled as he appeared nervous while applying the bandage.

Sophia was surprised at his action, everyone in the school knew who Alexander Carter was, but why was he kneeling to apply a cute bandage to her knee?

He stood up to his feet by the time he finished "I'm Alexander Carter. You can just call me Alex" He said nervously.

"I'm Sophia," she said and beamed with a smile.

He smiled, his pale green eyes were locked to her brown eyes and at that moment her heart fluttered in a way she found amusing.

Call it teenage infatuation, but his little attention had made her so happy and giddy. From then onward, he brought her the same type of bandage every day to change the used one, and soon he started bringing her snacks from the cafeteria, even though she never asked for them.

From there they became close friends, and Sophia had hoped it was more than that. It was during that time that she had written her first love letter, but she never gave it to him.

Their teenage story was cute while it lasted.

Everything changed after they graduated and he left for University.

Alex became distant from her and never answered her calls from his second year.

Sophia started college late and had to do a five-year course program, so Alex had finished two years before her.

In her fourth year, her father proposed marriage to her and his friend's son, promising it won't affect her education, it was abrupt and she was never given a reason as to his decision but when Sophia realized who she was marrying, she agreed without thinking twice.

A tear stroked down her cheeks as she read the content of the letter which she had written on her Eighteenth birthday, unable to read further, Sophia finally stood up from the floor, her hair covering part of her face, she briefly glanced at her tear stroked eyes on the mirror.

Reaching out for the suitcase, Sophia pushed the box, making her way to the door. As she extended her arm to grasp the door handle, she attempted to slip the letter into her bag. However, amid her multitasking, the letter slipped from her fingers and missed the opening of the bag, unbeknownst to her.

Alex has always been the first choice for her but she appeared to be less to him. A bitter chuckle escaped her lips as she shut the door to their room. He had always let her sleep in here while he slept in a room opposite.

With each step she took, it felt like a slice through her heart. Reaching the dining, she brought out a pen from her bag and opened the file on the table with trembling fingers. And without the heart to read whatever was written in the divorce papers, Sophia signed the papers.

Sophia signed her name on the last paper, besides Alex's name, and that's when her gaze fell on the part of the alimony.

"If money is your way of making me feel okay, rather keep it to yourself, Alex" She whispered, she doesn't need his alimony, the tears which were in her eyes had been wiped off already. Sophia had no intention of signing the papers with tears.

He wanted this and she was giving it to him, so why cry? Tears wouldn't help solve her situation, tears wouldn't make Alex rethink this. And lastly, tears wouldn't make Alex love her as much as she does.

Someone out there wanted this to happen, but she had no idea who. Finn is her friend and nothing was in between them, so who was in the picture? And who was making Alex stubbornly come at her for a divorce? Lastly, who was the person beside Finn that appeared to look so much like her?

Well, that was none of her business any longer. Alex Carter wasn't her business any longer, she had signed the papers and accepted that Alex doesn't care about her or her feelings for him and that he would never reciprocate.

Stepping out of the house, the rain had stopped falling already, Sophia's gaze fell on the car waiting outside for her. Eric, the chauffeur came down and walked towards her.

"Young Madam... Where are you going to this night? I was asked to drop you off at your parent's home tomorrow and not this night" he said, hoping she returns inside as the night was cold. He looked up from her bag and then to her.

Sophia smiled "Alex said so?" she asked, but before Eric could answer, she opened up "Don't worry, I can drive myself" He gazed up at her, Eric was well aware of how her relationship with Alex had been from the start.

Sophia packed her bags into her car with the help of Eric who was still insisting she stays behind for the night, but she refused and got into the driver's seat.

Trying hard to not think about anything as she settled her hand on the steering wheel. A few minutes later, she drove the car out of the gates, hoping to leave behind whatever she felt for Alex, but things were not as easy as they seemed.
