Chapter 6

Sandra

Cornerstone  high school was  overcrowded with many pupils. News travelled fast that Jake and I were a couple even as we were not. I felt offended. I mean what was there to like about the guy? He was a snob and he wasn't that hot as some of the girls said. It was embarrassing how they would drool over him... I didn't understand what they saw there.

I admit, Jake and I had made it a habit to walk at the school premises together. We ate together during lunch and even went to the school library together.  Perhaps that's why people considered us a couple. Well I was uncomfortable with that, neither was Peter..I think. He was growing distant from us. And that was worrying me

"I managed to get three tickets to see the famous Hayden that you've been telling me about." Said Jake, placing the tickets on the table.

I was filled with so much excitement that I screamed out loud without intending to do so. I had such a big crush on Hayden. My favourite musician of all times.

"Oh my God. How did you, I thought they were all sold out." I asked, curious.

Jake fixed his posture and raised his chin up. I felt slightly annoyed by that.

"I have plenty of friend's." The snob answered with confidence eminating from his voice. I could see Peter was annoyed. I couldn't keep in in anymore. I didn't know what to make of his agitating behaviour.

"What's wrong with you?" I blurted out.

Peter eyed me for a while.

"Nothing." He replied, his voice laced with doubt.

"No. I don't believe that. Did Jake and I do something offensive to you?"

"Of course not."

Peter stood from his chair and grabbed his backpack.

"You guys have fun at the concert, I have other plans on that day."

I was surprised. This was the first time Peter walked away from a grande opportunity.

"But you seemed very excited about it. You said you'd be free on the day of the concert."

"I know what I said. I hadn't bought any tickets because I was planning to be there. Now if you excuse me. Jess needs me."

I watched as my friend walk away. Jake looked at me with pity.

"I wanted us to watched the Hayden concert together with him..." I said.

Jake drove me to my place. I was relieved that classes for the day had ended, Moreover because I was finally at home.

"Don't worry too much about Peter. He's probably stressing about Jess." The snob assured me, just before driving away.

My body felt heavy, so was my brain. I was starting to worry about my friend. Being that stressed about Jess was turning him into a monster or maybe it was because he just loved her too much and afraid that he was going to lose her. But again that would be impossible. The last time we saw her, she was better. She didn't show signs of dangerous injury. She had healed.

Jake

I couldn't believe Sandra actually accepted to go with me to the concert. Things were turning really smooth on my side. We were growing closer and closer. However there was something disturbing me. I had sensed something bad from Peter. There was something different about him. He had a scent that reminded me of someone, wait it was Jess. Had they been running against one another? It was possible.  Anyway, they were probably a thing by then. If only he knew what Jess was. I wish I could tell him, she was a witch. But I know  no one would believe me. I needed evidence to prove it. But for now all I wanted to do was to reminisce about Sandra. She had somehow became my addiction. Yet she didn't know.

As I was taking a much needed swim in the pool, I heard a noise. Someone was at the gate. I lifted my body out of that water..  My heart was pounding. I was ready to kill. But then I realised from the scent that it was a friendly. Paul walked to my direction. I stood my ground. Like a dog waiting steadily to see him.

"Your senses are improving." Said the coach.

"There was nothing wrong with them." I spoke defensively.

"I meant while you're inside the water. You're dripping. Here!" Paul threw me a towel and I began to wipe off all the water from my body.

Paul chuckled.

"You know it's good that you're making steps to improve in your senses."

Was he complimenting me? Wow. That's a first.

"Well I want to be strong enough to protect Sandra when she gets in trouble one day." I said boldly.

Coach raised an eyebrow..

"Protect her from what?"

I did not want to make it into an issue but I had to be sure Sandra was going to be safe. I needed that assurance.

"Her friend, Peter. He's dating the Winslow daughter." I blurted out.

"As in the witch family?"

I nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me this before. Where does he live?"

"What do you want to do to him?"

"Tell him what Jess is all about." Said the coach.

"But telling him alone won't be enough. He will need prove. Peter is an assertive guy. I've hanged out with him a couple of times. Evidence matters more to him than anything else."

"Well we can't stand here and do nothing."

Paul was right. I couldn't just stand there and worry. We had to do something.

I grabbed my phone and made some calls on my phone. Since this was a human settlement. Howling in the neighborhood during the day was risky. It would expose our kind. I grabbed something decent to wear. A Jean, a vest and some sneakers were just about right. The entire pack members arrived a few minutes later at the house. Paul was the one to make the announcement since he was my father's beta.

Paul cleared his voice.

"I'm sorry to call you all like this. But this is an emergency and has to be dealt with tonight. There are rumours that Jess Winslow has recovered from her "accident". Which means she'll want to avenge herself or worse. Now a new problem has come forth. When our friends as well as family is threatened, we step in and protect them from harm. It is how we do thing's. It is in our nature to do so. A friend of the family is under threat. We believe that if we don't scare her off then she is likely to hurt our friend." Coach explained.

The werewolves began to look at one another in disbelief.

One of them whose name was Zachariah raised his hand.

"Who is this friend that you're referring to. Is she from another pack?" He asked.

Paul eyed me. I could see the tension he was feeling in his eyes alone.

"She's a human and I want her to be kept safe." I blurted out.

The werewolves looked at me with disgust and some were even complaining.

"Well in that case, I ask that I may not be involved in this madness. I refuse to betray the rules of our kind to gain favours." Said Zachariah.

The others agreed with him. But their reaction displeased coach more than it did me.

He growled angrily and the room was in silence

"This is not a discussion that you should debate on, it's not a request either. You will all participate in helping protect this human and reporting anything to me that needs to be told. You will do these things because Alpha Daniel is not here, but his beta is."  Paul pressed.

The werewolves stopped complaining. They all listened as Paul gave them instruction each on what they had to do. Each of us had a task to fulfil that for the evening of that day.
