As everyone left the gym through the main doors, I caught up with Luke and Mary. I walked out with them as they went on and on about what happened with Mika and Drac. I had memorized my speech, so I didn’t worry too much about it after the glares I sent them both, they had shut up quickly.
“I didn’t know they were so in awe of our Ms. Matthews,” Luke said jokingly.
“Right? I was so going to say that!” Mary said as she giggled when Luke started to laugh.
“Okay, kids! Time for our brunch date!” Luke said with a grin. “You could bring your boyfriends if you want though, Nyx.”
I elbowed him in the back as we walked towards my parents car to get my wallet. Mom and Apollo were already there and dad was walking over from my history teacher, Mrs. Memnon. Once dad reached us, he unlocked the car and I reached in and grabbed my wallet out from the center console.
“Don’t forget that this weekend is your birthday! You can invite anyone you like,” Mom started to say but dad interrupted her.
“Only friends though, Nyx. I don’t want to hear talk about boyfriends from anyone,” Dad said. He never liked the fact that I was growing up right in front of his eyes, but he would have to get used to it in the future. I did have to go to college in the fall and try to find a career that would fit me.
“Don’t worry dad, Luke and Mary, and maybe Kala will come but that is it.” Kala was our other friend, but she was a junior this past year. She didn’t know if her parents were picking her up today or this weekend, yet. She lived with her grandma here in Dallas Center, Iowa, but her parents lived in florida.
Mary’s phone dinged and she reached for it from her back pocket. She quickly typed back and sighed loudly. Then the next ding chimed and Mary looked defeated. She looked up at us and shook her head.
“Kala’s mom came today to pick her up for the summer. They are going to Florida to get her dad and then they are going to Montana for vacation this summer.” Mary said as she put her phone back into her pocket.
“Well, then it’ll just be the three musketeers.” Luke said as he tried to pretend that he was swinging a sword and jumping up and down, causing Apollo to laugh, and the rest of us to giggle at his antics.
“No sword play, Luke. You’re really bad at it,” I say as I try holding in my laughter.
“Awe, buzz kill.” Luke pouts and Mary kisses him.
“Eww, cooties,” Apollo screeches.
My dad and mom just laugh and shoo us away. We head for Luke’s new jeep as we walk away. I see Mika and Drac looking in our direction and talking in a flurry of hand movements. Mika kept looking my way and Drac seemed to be snapping at him.
“Wonder why they are fighting this time?” Luke asked as he helped Mary into his jeep.
“They never really fight where I can see them, so I’m curious,” I reply back as I get into the back and slide into the middle. My truck was in the shop getting new struts, an oil change, and some frame work done to it.
“Who cares? I’m starving!” Mary said followed by a growling stomach that made me laugh.
“If you didn’t skip breakfast then you wouldn’t be so hungry,” I said as my own stomach growled. We all busted out laughing.
Luke peeled out of the school parking lot and headed towards Village Inn in Des Moines. Mary wanted IHOP but we vetoed that choice by out voting her. On the ride we all talked about what we plan to do now that we are out of high school and before we go our own ways for college. Luke pulled into the restaurant and we all got out of the jeep.
“Booth 3 here we come!” As soon as we walked in though, we were met with disappointment to see that a group of older gentlemen were sitting there. Our favorite spot. We all sigh and wait for a waitress to find us a new seat. When we sat down we noticed that we sat in booth thirteen and we all sighed with trepidation of the omen, but chose to ignore it.
“Hello, I’m Melody and I’ll be your waitress. What can I get you to drink?” The waitress asked. She was new.
“What happened to Eva?” Mary asked, looking sad also.
“She is in the hospital. She broke her leg a week ago and still hasn’t healed right so they had to re-break her leg last night.” She answered with an annoyed look at us. She was older than us by a few years and seemed too preppy for this line of work. But as soon as her answer came, her mask dropped. I saw it, but Mary and Luke didn’t.
“I’ll have chocolate milk with a belgian waffle topped with cinnamon apples and a side of bacon.” I told her.
Mary and Luke ordered their normal choices and we all just sat around the table and talked. When our food came, Mary and Luke and I dug in. Right when we finished I saw Mika and Drac walk in with Carry O’Brian and Stacy Nelson. I felt a little annoyed that our peaceful brunch was ruined but Melody came with three checks and walked away.
I snatched Mary’s and Luke’s checks and walked to the front to pay. Total was roughly fifty dollars and I won’t leave a tip to a rude waitress. I paid and went back to wait for them to finish eating. When we were all done, Mary groaned in satisfaction.
“That was some good food,” Mary said as she threw a five down onto the table, Luke doing the same. They looked at me and waited for me to do the same. I grumbled but threw a five down as well. It was tradition and I felt like keeping my friends happy by supporting waitresses. As we walked out, I saw that Mika, Drac, Carry, and Stacy sat in our spot.
“Well there goes our special spot,” Mary mumbled under her breath, causing Luke and I to laugh out loud.
“Ignore them sweetheart, we have summer shopping to do.” Luke said as we walked back out to his jeep.
We headed to Merle Hay Mall for some summer shopping. When we got there, Mary and I whined until Luke let us go get more piercings. Once we found Claire’s, Mary and I went in and got our fourth set of piercings as Luke waited outside. Our new earrings were another set of gold. I was allergic to steel and Mary only wore pure gold out of habit when she was with me.
“I want a new purse!” I said as we passed a few stores. I saw that there was a new shop and wanted to go into it. I waved bye to Luke and Mary and went into the store alone. I looked around and saw someone putting up purses.
“How can I help you?” The elder lady in front of me asks before I have time to greet her. She doesn’t turn around, like she felt my presence when I walked in or something.
“I’m looking for a purse and a computer bag.” I tell her as I look around at the different purses. I really loved the purple one with witches hats all over it.
“We’re having a first day sale. Buy one, get one free.” The lady said as she grabbed the purse I had just been looking at and another one with moons on it I didn't even see.
“I’ll take them both! I love supernatural things,” I told her, trying to contain my excitement.
“Here.” She handed me both purses and walked towards another section with a small section containing a select number of computer bags. “This will be perfect for you then.”
She grabs two computer bags, one with dragons and another with wolves. I squealed with glee. I followed her up to the register and saw a beautiful necklace and Tiara full of moons. It was beautiful with white Opals and deep Sapphires.
“How much for that set?” I ask in awe. I only had five hundred for my graduation presents from my parents so I hope I had enough to buy them.
“One fifty,” She said as she brought them out and rang it up before I saw the price tag. Everything cost two hundred even so I was excited. I thanked the lady and walked out and went to target to meet Luke and Mary.
When I got home, my parents were waiting for me and Apollo was watching tv. I hugged my parents before I went up to my room and grabbed my laptops and stuffed them into my new computer bags, then I pulled out my purses and picked the ones with the moons on it. Looking inside I see a matching wallet. I put everything from my old wallet into my new one and took the tags off of everything. Last I pulled out the Tiara and necklace and saw the price tag said fifteen hundred, not one fifty like the lady had said. I will go back tomorrow and return them.I put the Tiara and its matching necklace on and looked into my mirror. My once rounded ears looked pointy and my hair was all black. On my forehead was a crescent moon with beautiful designs going around and over my eyebrows. I took the tiara and necklace off and sat them on my dresser and looked back into my mirror and saw the same image as before. I started to freak out and found that my hair was completely black as I looked down at it.‘
I woke up, feeling disjointed. My eyes were puffy and my head hurt. My body protested when I tried to move and my phone started ringing in my purse. I heard a light knocking on the door of the borrowed room I slept in. “Yeah?” I whisper and see Mary and Mrs. White come into the room. I try to sit up but it just makes me dizzy. They both rush over to help me and leave the door open causing me to groan with the light coming through the door. Landon and Luke walk by and just stare at me through the door. “Boys, leave!” Mrs. White snaps at them as Mary walks over and slams the door in their faces. “You okay, Mary?” I ask as they help me sit up. Mrs. White hands me a bottle of cold water that Mary brought in. “Men are stupid.” Mary huffs out as she sits next to me and I wrap my arms around her and lay my head on hers. “That they are my girls, just remember, mates and friends do stupid things too.” Mrs. White says as she sits at the edge of the bed. “But breakfast is done, so clean up
I was awake by midnight and had every possession I owned with me. I carried my purse and rolled my suitcase down the hall and carried it down the stairs. I opened the front door to see Landon’s cold glare. I glared back and shoved passed him and walked towards my truck. I put my suitcase in the back seat and got into the front, putting my purse in the passenger's seat.“Here.” Landon says coldly while handing me my beanie he stole from me yesterday.“Thanks.” I say just as coldly. “Tell them I love them and I’ll call once I figure out where I’m going.” I slam my door and don’t wait for a reply before I start my truck and leave, not looking back at all.Driving, I turn my phone off and turn the radio up. Leaving Dallas Center, I reach Grimes and go to Walmart to get supplies for my trip. As I walk into Walmart, I put my beanie on to cover the tips of my ears. As I walk around grabbing random things, I see Mika and Drac also shopping. I lower my head and walk as if I don’t know them bu
We had driven past one of the falls as we followed Satu and Codex. Mika was in the back this time and Drac and I were in the front. My hand still tingled where Codex had touched it. Drac’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel and seemed to be thinking about something as we followed my alleged mates. I tried to get him to talk to me but he just grunted. I guess I will have to try talking to him when it’s just the two of us.“We're here, I guess.” Mika said as we pulled up to a large house.“It’s beautiful!” I said in excitement. I wondered how old the building was. It looked to be an old Victorian house but with two front peeks and two back peeks. I wanted a home like this but knew I would never get one. One thing for sure, if they were my mates, I know we would spend a lot of time here.“Yeah, well, let’s just go in.” Drac grunted out. We all piled out of the truck and walked in with Satu and Codex. The outside of the house was a light blue color but the inside was all dark oak
We all headed out, Mika drove with Codex in front, and Satu, Drac, and I in the back. We headed to the first waterfall that we had passed and parked my truck in the parking lot. Getting out we all grabbed out stuff, but Codex grabbed my suitcase from me. I reached into the back and grabbed my purse and laptops. Mika tossed me my keys and Satu caught them before they smacked me in the face, then he handed them to me. Thanking him, I put my keys into the pocket of my faded jeans, and we all moved deeper into the forest behind the waterfall, carefully watching out for humans, so they didn’t spot us.“This is going to be one hell of an adventure,” Mika said as we climbed up a steep hill. “Tell me about it. We’ve never been to Feirie. Hope it’s not all prim and proper.” Codex jokes, making me laugh.“I’ve never been there either, so I hope not.” I commented on his joke.“We have to get to the top of the waterfall to reach the portal, from there we will be heading straight for the castle.
I seethed alone in a room that my father told me to use for the night. I was annoyed and pissed that a Fae hater was even here. My father and brother had laughed, but they didn’t know who or what he was. A Wolf shifter who hated the Fae, me included. A knock sounded at my door. I walked over to the door and opened it, finding Drac, Satu, and Codex on the other side of the door. Sighing, I let them into my large room. All of my men came into the room and Satu came over to me and kissed my forehead. My anger dissipated once they were all here.“Come lay down on the bed with us and cuddle, babygirl.” Codex said as he laid down. I smiled at my men and went and laid on the bed.As I laid down, Drac took my other side and Satu crawled up between my legs and laid his head on my stomach. Codex on my right, Satu in the center laying on me, and Drac on my left. I felt safe and content. Satu rubbed my sides lazily with his thumbs, Drac played with my hair, and Codex rubbed my arm and Satu’s hair
That evening, I received the help of two Fae women. Kara and Nova. Kara was the same height as I was and a noble and Nova was smaller than us but also a noble of the court. Kara was unique and Nova was spirited. Both had blond hair and blue eyes and I found out that they were sisters. They were ready for the party already and I needed a lot of help, because I have never worn a dress before. I stood ready an hour later in my emerald green dress, heels, necklace, and earrings from my brother and the crown my father had given me this morning. Nova did my make-up lightly and Kara spritzed a light perfume onto me. I smelled like roses.“Your mates are going to fall all over themselves for your first dance. Imagine having four mates,” Nova sighed. Kara and I laughed at her sigh of jealousy and finished getting ready.“My little sister is never wrong though. You will have to choose your first dance partner from your mates or the unmated males of the court.” Kara said with a small smile.“Tha
When Zane dropped the ball that his father wouldn’t be happy he wasn’t mates with his friend's daughter, that hurt me a little bit. He did explain that I am and will always be his one and only mate, which cheered me up some but by the end of the party we had all gone our own ways. I wanted to hang out with my guys alone but we all needed sleep if we were returning to the human realm tomorrow. I layed on my bed, both my crowns on the vanity, waiting to be packed up tomorrow with everything else I needed to pack. I heard a soft knock at my door, got up from my bed, and answered it. I found all five of my mates on the other side of my door.“Can we sleep in here? For some reason we all felt anxious and wanted to be near you, baby girl,” Codex said as he pushed through the door I was holding open.“That would be my fault. I’m anxious. I want to find my birth mother and ask her why she felt the need to give me away and not keep me. I want all of your parents to like me. Landon’s family lov
