The Cruel Truth
I knew I'd promised Kaan I wouldn't leave the room, but this odd feeling inside me told me I should go with Dritan. A few minutes later, I changed into the darkest clothes I could find—black leggings, a dark gray tunic, and a black, hooded cloak—and followed Dritan outside the inn. He led me through the back door and then through a narrow passage between the buildings.“Where are you taking me?” I asked in a hushed voice as we passed the empty streets wrapped in the darkness of the night.“We're going to the training grounds,” he said.I frowned. “Why? What do you want to show me there?”Dritan halted and turned my way. “What do you know about the Crescent Hills Pack?”I shook my head. “Nothing aside from the fact that they didn't want to pledge loyalty to Alpha Khaos.”He huffed out a dry laugh. “And even that small part of your knowledge is incorrect.”“What do you mean?”“When Alpha Korad, Alpha Kaan's father, was alive, he and the Alpha of the Crescent Hills Pack used to be friend

The Curse
I stayed silent the entire way back to the inn. I could still hear the screams, the sounds of breaking bones and tearing flesh. I could still smell the coppery odor of blood blended with the muddy ground.I had heard it all before countless times on the battlefield, but never had I seen the deaths so brutal and pointless. Alpha Kaan had taken no part in the butchery. He had done something even worse… He'd observed and orchestrated the kills.“The emissaries seemed pleased by what they saw,” Dritan said dryly as we were approaching the inn. “Now they can report that Alpha Kaan is everything Alpha Khaos wanted him to be—a perfectly merciless killer.”Nausea rose up to my throat. There was something that terrified me more than Kaan's brutality or mercilessness. He seemed to savor every scream and every last breath. He enjoyed it. Out there, on those grounds, he truly was the monster everyone feared.Dritan grabbed my hand, pulling me to a halt as I was about to open the inn's back door.

The Bond
More nervous laughter broke free. “This is insane. I can barely feel my wolf, and you tell me that I can somehow heal you?” He shook his head. “You don't need to sense your wolf. All you have to do is sense something else.” I threw my hands up in frustration. “Like what?” He locked his eyes on mine. “Mate bond.” My breath hitched, and I stumbled back, my eyes widening. “I believe that you might be my mate, Asena.” A faint smile curved his lips. “But that's... impossible,” I breathed out. “Why would it be impossible? You can't deny that there's a connection between us,” he insisted. I sucked in a breath that went nowhere. “I can't be your mate.” I shook my head, staring into his dark eyes. “Your witch must have made a mistake.” He inched closer. “Melantha was never wrong. She was a seer, although her visions were sometimes nothing but an unclear mass of symbols and blurry images.” He smiled wryly and sat on the edge of the bed. “When Alpha Khaos defeated me and my warriors, he

Restless
I had waited for Kaan until the early dawn, but he hadn't returned. Anxiety consumed me slowly as I strengthened my hearing, alarmed by the slightest noise coming from outside the room. I knew that the other rooms in the inn were occupied by the Elite Squad, and knowing that did not exactly lessen my restlessness. I thought about Kaan and Caspian and the reason why they hadn't returned. Had they come too late? Had General Nathair found the rest of the members of the Crescent Hills Pack? A shudder coursed through me as I thought about that boy and his sisters. How many young pups were there…? I had known General Nathair only from stories told among the resistance, but from what I heard, I doubted that he would hesitate before spilling the blood of children. I would have lied if I'd said that I wasn't worried about my situation here as well. I was most likely the only non-shifter among the army of savage men. I didn't have a lot of fans out there, and I'd surely made a few new enemies.

Their Revenge
Two more tent walls turned into shreds, revealing Kylar's companions. Dusan and two other members of the Elite Squad stepped inside, and then three others I didn't recognize. Seven… Only a miracle would make me defeat them, but that didn't mean I was going down without a fight.“Get the fuck out of this tent. Otherwise, you will all die,” I hissed, shifting in my fighting stance as the seven shifters surrounded me.Kylar snorted, “Asena, put the blade down. You might have learned how to fight, but that doesn't make you stronger than all of us. Be a good girl and give up.”“Screw you!” I roared, and others laughed.Dusan stepped closer, his tongue darting out and running over his lower lip. Disgusting. “Drop the blade, princess. I would have promised that if you do it now, we'll make it so it won't hurt… but it will hurt. It will hurt a lot.” A wicked flame danced in his golden eyes. “But we will surely break more of your bones if you keep resisting.”A shudder coursed through me, but

Missing
KAANFucking Nathair! Caspian and I had spent more than six hours planting false trails to mislead his army, and then we had the doubtful pleasure of being invited to Nathair's castle at Inberville to “celebrate” the annihilation of the Crescent Hills Pack. I'd wanted nothing more than to tell him to go screw himself, and I would have… if that fucker wasn't Alpha Khaos's nephew. He was placed high on my death pull, and I awaited the day I would end him. Unfortunately, that day would come only after I regained my full strength.I stormed through the woods, heading to the fields outside the Shadow Forest. The crescent moon was already at its peak as we neared the place where the camp had been set. Fury satiated my blood, fueling my muscles and forcing me to run faster. It wasn't supposed to be like this. Asena wasn't supposed to stay alone in that camp for so long. I knew that Dritan would protect her on the road, but he wouldn't be able to guard her through the night. I should have bee

Stolen Power
ASENAPain. It was the first thing that brought me back to consciousness. The other thing I felt was cold, but perhaps it was a good thing. I was frozen enough for the cold to dull my senses… and dull some of the pain as well.Filling my lungs with air hurt, the pain forcing me to pay with tears for every breath I took. Struggling, I opened my eyes and saw the sky. Its gray color told me it must have been right before dawn.I drew another painful breath and slightly lifted my head. I blinked several times before the blurry shapes turned into something recognizable. Once they did, I realized that the lower part of my body lay in shallow water while the upper body rested on the river shore. The water was freezing. No wonder I felt cold.I knew I had to find a way to drag my body out of the water, but the pain that seemed to come from every part of me limited my movements. I looked around me and saw two broken branches lying on the shore on both sides of me. I sucked in a sharp breath an

Relief
KAANAsena's whole body shivered as she stared at her dead ex-mate. She might have even a sliver of guilt, even though cutting his throat was an act of mercy. He would have died anyway. His injuries were too severe, and the second night in the Shadow Forest would have been his last one. I knew that now after I had heard the spirits whispering among the trees.I placed my hand on her shoulder, and she almost flinched. “It's OK,” I murmured. “You're safe now.”She slowly rose to her feet and blew out a shaky breath. “There were four others…”I gently grasped her arms, turning her to face me. “I know. I killed two of them, and the other two... well…”Her brows knitted. “What happened to them?”A faint smirk curved my lips. “The forest decided they didn't deserve to live.”Her eyes widened. “W-what?”I led her to a large rock by the shore where we both could sit. “When I found out that they attacked you and that you must have run into the forest, I turned into my wolf form and ran to find

Special Treatment
ASENAMy heart kept thundering against my chest as Kaan carried me in his arms like a fragile princess. Perhaps I should have been more bothered by it. For the last three years, I had been used to harsh treatment where I had been rather “one of the guys” than a woman. With Kaan, everything was different—I was different. By his side, I began to believe in things I had never thought were possible for me. Ellaria surely would have laughed her ass off if she'd found out that my thoughts were currently filled with some romantic crap. I was a warrior, for Goddess's sake! I should have cared about my strength, endurance, and how quickly I would be able to fight after falling from the cliff, but none of that currently mattered. My mind was occupied by the terrifying perspective that I probably stank of sweat, the dirt, and Goddess only knew what else, and that Kaan could probably barely stand my odor.I was highly aware that this should have been the least of my worries, but I couldn't help i

For the Cause
I heard shouts and screams coming from outside the tent. I saw the shades of warriors running back and forth, some in rage, others in panic. What the hell was happening out there?“How bad is it?” Kaan asked.Caspian drew a deep breath. “More than twenty tents were set on fire simultaneously. Then several others caught fire and... ”“Fuck.” Kaan dragged his hand down his face. “Any signs of those who set the fire?”“They could have easily blended in as soon as the panic erupted,” Caspian mused.Kaan nodded, processing his words, before turning to me. “Stay in the tent and don't go anywhere. I'll send Dritan to watch over you.”I frowned. “I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself. Besides, I can help. I can—”“No.” His sharp tone almost made me flinch. “I will not risk having you out there. I've just got you back.”“Kaan, seriously, I can help,” I argued. He shook his head. “Those who attacked you had friends—friends more than willing to avenge those who died. They don't care th
