Chapter FOURTY-ONE:

A moment later Charlie’s anxious face appeared as she opened the door.

“Atlas?”

“Come in, Charlie,” he told her. She walked in carefully and her eyes landed on Anais. Her swift intake of breath at the sight of her told Atlas that it was obvious how sick she was.

She looked tired and drawn. Her anger had diminished but in its place was the fear and grief she had shown when he first saw her. Her eyes were red rimmed and her mouth was pinched.

“What did the doctor say?” she asked as she pulled her bag from around her shoulder and sat down heavily on the chair next to Atlas’ side of the bed.

“It is severe rejection sickness. I will need to stay here until she’s better.”

“Alright. What can I do to help?”

Atlas shook his head. He couldn’t think of his company or anything at the moment.

For all he had continued to put Anais second, or third or last in a lot of cases, suddenly, she was the most important thing in Atlas’ life
