Seventy-Four

Sarah couldn't imagine anything that could ever erase the pain she felt. It was a sharp sense of loss, knowing Sophia wasn't her daughter.

She had breastfed Sophia, and ensured she received a good education. Now, all of that seemed like an illusion.

She sat beside her husband in the living room, gazing at the framed family photo of them with Sophia, remembering the day it was taken on Sophia's 11th birthday, when she had started developing a rebellious streak.

Geoffrey turned off the flat-screen TV mounted on the wall opposite them, while Helena sat quietly, occasionally wiping away tears that rolled down her cheek, trying to stifle her emotions.

Sarah felt no pity for Helena. She wasn't at a loss; this was all her fault.

The air was thick with tension, and although her husband appeared calm, Sarah knew he was seething with resentment.
