15. Giving In
Horror gripped my veins as I stared at Isaac, whose gaze was razor-sharp. He looked every bit the beast that the tales claimed him to be.
“You…you wouldn’t.” My voice shook and I hated the fact that it showed my fear. Isaac stalked towards me until he was close, too close for my liking. His wolf form was….intimidating. His black fur gleamed under the fluorescent lights and in the middle of modernity, he looked unreal. I had to tilt my head to look up at him.
“That is exactly what I intend to do. I don’t give empty threats,” he rasped.
I averted my gaze. I didn’t want him to see the telltale sign of tears.

Going out of the packhouse felt strange. It felt oddly like getting a chance to taste the outside world after a long time. I felt like it has been decades since I’ve seen the outside world instead of a few weeks. I stiffened while Alpha Caius’ smirk remained intact in its place. I heard someone come up and stand beside me. From my peripheral vision, I saw Marcus. “I apologize, Alpha but we are not allowed to leave our Luna alone. That too, with an inmate wolf.” It was hard jibe, one meant to be a polite way of saying ‘fuck off', and I almost winced thinking of what alpha Caius may think. Before he could take it in any other way, I said, “What he meant to say is, my mate alpha Isaac is slightly over-possessive, and like any other newly mated pair, it was tough for him to part ways so it would not be a good thing if you decided to speak to me alone. My pride at being able to find a solution and be a responsible luna, if not for real, but in pretence and being able to gain everyone’s praise was short-lived. Marcus and James were conversing as we got out of the car. They sounded nervous and spoke so softly that it was difficult for me to decipher. I decided to ignore it. Since it was already evening and I was dying to go back to bed and have some food in my stomach. The nerve-wracking day had taken away my appetite and now that the meeting was over, I felt famished. When I woke up, it was midday. It didn’t feel like my whole body was being consumed by fire nor was there any mind-numbing pain. I was experiencing a strange calmness. At the back of my mind, I knew this was temporary bliss before another wave would wash over my body and once again, I’d have to seek the Alpha. The thought left an unpleasant bitterness in my mouth. “How do you feel, Luna?” Georgia’s voice cut through my thoughts. I blinked slowly before turning to the source and realized other than her, Clarissa and Vanessa were also present. I dragged my feet by the time we were in the main hall. Helen led me to a table surrounded by four wooden chairs. The scraping sound was louder than saul as I pulled a chair and sat down heavily. “What did you mean?” My voice sounded raspy. Helen didn’t answer immediately. She picked up the jug kept at the centre of the table and poured water into the glass that was kept beside and placed it in front of me. I turned my head slightly, letting my gaze stray towards the corridor leading to my room. Helen cleared her throat and I turned back to the table. I blandly stared at the glass before my gaze flickered to Helen. Her lips stretched into a terse smile. “I would suggest you take one of the pills. You look like you will go into heat any time now and that would be bad for both of you.” My eyebrows dipped. How did she know?

I wheezed as I sprinted towards the residence. The evening had already crept in, making the trees appear inky and brooding. When I had rushed out of the room, I didn’t see Helen on my way out and I was relieved. I didn’t want her to see my tear-stained face and humiliated self. I stopped just a few feet away from the door that led back to the residence, surrounded by high walls and rules. The place where people considered me as their Luna. I planted my hands above my knees and bent slightly, gulping in some much-needed breath. My heart was still drumming wildly, my body was sweat-drenched and my face was an open book of the disgrace that I had just been subjected to. The following morning, I woke up alone, languid and slow. From the unkempt part of the room and the silence, I knew Clarissa wasn’t here. I didn't linger on that for long as I pushed myself off the bed and went about my morning routine. I stared and watched as my hands performed the routine tasks on autopilot. It almost felt like I was watching someone else. When I came out dressed to go out, I heard a knock on the door. “Enter.” I knew it wasn’t Clarissa. Instead, it was Nerissa, her sister. She mutely placed the tray on the coffee table and asked, “Would Luna like me to assist in something else?” I could hear the curt tone under the polite decorum. I shook my head. “Thank you but that will be all.” She didn’t wait around. I regarded the food tray for some time before sighing and sitting down to put some calories in my system.
