14. Threat
To say she was beautiful would be an understatement. I had only gotten a glimpse of her that day before I had turned heel and ran. But up close, I begrudgingly had to accept the fact Isaac must have been enamoured.
“If i hadn’t met you today, I wouldn’t know how flattering it would feel to be gawked at by an alpha’s mate.” The voice was soft, almost melodious but one couldn’t miss the taunt and smugness in the tone. She tucked a black lock behind her ear, the fading bluish highlight still visible before crossing her hands. I clenched my jaw as I noticed that she did that on purpose. On her ring finger shone a diamond ring, adorning her manicured pink-nailed fingers.

Going out of the packhouse felt strange. It felt oddly like getting a chance to taste the outside world after a long time. I felt like it has been decades since I’ve seen the outside world instead of a few weeks. The car glided smoothly, manoeuvred around the curves, I trained my gaze outside the window, drinking in the sight— the trees, the smell of mud. The morning sun was shining mildly, its heat felt like a warm blanket. I swallowed the sudden formed thick lump in my throat and ignored the burn in my eyes. I glanced beside me where Marcus sat, keeping an appropriate distance between us, his chin dipped downward, frown evident as he types furiously on the laptop. I fidgeted with the edge of the file that I was carrying but didn’t feel like opening it and going through the contents. I had finished reading and was prepared…somewhat.

I stiffened while Alpha Caius’ smirk remained intact in its place. I heard someone come up and stand beside me. My pride at being able to find a solution and be a responsible luna, if not for real, but in pretence and being able to gain everyone’s praise was short-lived. Marcus and James were conversing as we got out of the car. They sounded nervous and spoke so softly that it was difficult for me to decipher. I decided to ignore it. Since it was already evening and I was dying to go back to bed and have some food in my stomach. The nerve-wracking day had taken away my appetite and now that the meeting was over, I felt famished. When I woke up, it was midday. It didn’t feel like my whole body was being consumed by fire nor was there any mind-numbing pain. I was experiencing a strange calmness. At the back of my mind, I knew this was temporary bliss before another wave would wash over my body and once again, I’d have to seek the Alpha. I dragged my feet by the time we were in the main hall. Helen led me to a table surrounded by four wooden chairs. She picked up the jug kept at the centre of the table and poured water into the glass that was kept beside and placed it in front of me. I turned my head slightly, letting my gaze stray towards the corridor leading to my room. Helen cleared her throat and I turned back to the table. I blandly stared at the glass before my gaze flickered to Helen. Her lips stretched into a terse smile. “I would suggest you take one of the pills. You look like you will go into heat any time now and that would be bad for both of you.” My eyebrows dipped. How did she know?

I wheezed as I sprinted towards the residence. The evening had already crept in, making the trees appear inky and brooding.
