Irene's POV

I couldn't believe it. The necklace was mine. My name was inscribed on it, in beautiful cursive letters. I couldn't stop holding it and touching it. It was my new favorite thing in the world.

As I walked with Ethan toward my house, I couldn't help but keep looking at the necklace. I didn't understand why my name was on it, but I didn't care. It was mine, and it was perfect.

When we arrived at my house, I said, "No, stay with me. We can hang out a little longer." But Ethan shook his head. "It's getting late, Irene. You should head home."

I pouted, but I knew he was right. I hugged him and said goodbye, then walked towards my house. It was only a few blocks away, but it felt like miles. All I could think about was my new necklace.

When I stepped into the house, my mom was nowhere in sight. I went up to my room and kept looking at the necklace. I couldn't believe it was mine. I opened the book I got from my father's old cabin, hoping to distract myself from the ne
