Twenty Nine

I could hear scrambling. “No, you’re not. Where are you?” He demanded.

I used my free hand to clean my eyes profusely, like he was here, and would be able to see me. I needed to have some control of my emotions. It was a mistake answering the phone in the first place.

“I’m fine, Mike,” I mumbled.

More shuffling ensued. “You don’t sound fine, Maya!” He snapped right back.

I sighed as I got up, feeling like my legs weighed a ton of bricks. “You’re paranoid. I was watching some rom-com that didn’t feel like comedy at the last minute. It got me teary eyed. This things happen sometimes,” I said as convincing as I could.

“I doubt this. You’re sure you’re ok? How come I don’t hear the sounds of an ongoing movie? And, aren’t you in school?” He bombarded me with more questions.

I rolled my eyes at him. “Mike, please you can turn to a private investigator to some of the girls in the clan. I’m not in the mood. I will chat you up later. See ya,” I said in a high-pitched voice.
