Astrid's POV:

An intermittent mechanical-sounding beep disturbed my sleep, and I shifted in response. It crossed my mind that Alpha Jonathan might hunt me down if he learned that I was sleeping somewhere in the palace. With a sudden jolt, I rose from the bed and opened my eyes to light that was too bright. My surroundings appeared foreign, everything around me weird and unnatural.

Sharp pain emerged from my wrists, and I cried out in horror when I saw my hand connected to machine making the noise. A needle pierced my the back of my hand, and a bottle of water was attached to it.

“Malessia!” I cried frantically to my wolf. “Where are we?” When I didn’t get a response, I called her once again, then concentrated on her breathing. Nothing. A hollow space filled the area of my soul where my wolf should have been. My eyes filled with tears, and my heartbeat grew loud as panic engulfed me. What happened? Where was I?
