Chapter 26

Darius' question pierced through the air, hanging there for a moment before settling in my mind. I tried to ignore it, to push it away and not let it touch me, but I knew I couldn't hide from it forever. With a deep breath, I turned to face him and met his steady gaze.

"How old were you?" he asked, his voice soft but insistent.

I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to respond. I wanted to tell him the truth, to unburden myself of the weight of my past, but the words caught in my throat. How could I confess to him that I was still just a kid when this all happened to me? How could I let him see me as anything other than strong and capable?

The silence stretched between us, heavy and pregnant with unspoken words.
