Chapter Eighty-seven

Emily’s POV

It felt as though someone had hit me in the head with a brick and left behind a concussion that throbbed with every heartbeat and a splitting headache that made the light above my eyes flicker ominously.

I tried to open my eyes again but they were glued shut by sweat. My eyelashes fluttered against my cheekbones, and then I noticed that I was lying on a mattress.

I groaned softly. The room was dark but from what little I could see of it through the gaps in my eyelids, I guessed that I was in some sort of bedroom or apartment. It appeared fairly clean, with no trace of clutter. The bed itself was comfortable enough.

My heart began to speed up when I finally registered a familiar scent in the air around me. It was like the scent of something sweet mixed with wood smoke. Something like…
