Chapter 43

Reyna-

We had our talk about things, but things still didn’t feel normal between us. I could tell that he was still distant from me. I kept trying to communicate with him, but mostly I gave him the space that he seemed to need.

Walking through the ruined forest, we didn’t say much to each other. I could tell he was trying to force himself, but it was more as if he were simply going through the motions. I understood he was worried, as I was too, but it was different for him. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to reach him.

“Did you hear something?” Luka pulled me from my thoughts as he came to a stop.

Before answering, I looked around and carefully listened. At first, I didn’t hear anything, but a few seconds later I heard what sounded like a horse whining. It sounded as if it were in pain, so I forgot to answer Luka as I rushed toward the sound.
