Chapter 20: Surprise Guest

“I promise you’ll like this! Do you really think I’d give you something you won’t like?” River flashes me an innocent smile as he holds out a tart-like food, but the crust is pink and the cream is yellow. 

To my eleven year old brain who’s never seen such a thing, it looks like an alien’s food. But because I trusted River the most, I took it from him and slowly but surely, took a bite. 

Suddenly, there’s an explosion of flavors in my mouth. I taste vanilla, but mostly something sweet like a fruit, maybe a berry? But I can’t pinpoint it. It’s so good though that I devour the tiny thing in seconds. 

River grins at me. “I told you you would like it.”
